Ministry Updates Featuring Bro. Dr. Chuck Cofty

Today we have Evangelist Bro. Dr. Chuck Cofty who demonstrates for us how to post a ministry update.

If the caps is a bit much for you just pretend that the whole thing is being bawled in your ear by R. Lee Ermey. Or Jesus. I get the impression that some fundamentalists think that they both sound a lot alike.

PASTOR SPROWLS HAS BEEN THE PASTOR HERE FOR TWENTY-ONE YEARS. WE HAVE HAD GOOD MEETINGS SO FOR THIS WEEK WITH THE OLD FASHIONED ALTAR BEING USED GREATLY. THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL CHURCH NESTLED IN THE MOUNTAINS OF CENTERAL PENNSYLVANIA AND COMPLETLY SURROUNDED BY LARGE MOUNTAINS. THE VIEWS ARE SIMILIAR TO THE PAINTINGS OF NORMAN ROCKWELL AND THE PEOPLE VERY KIND AND ATTENTIVE. WE HAVE HAD A LARGE NUMBER OF VISITORS EACH SERVICE WITH PASTOR JOHN LEATHERMAN AND MANY OF HIS FOLKS FROM HIS GOOD CHURCH IN ATTENDANCE LAST EVENING WITH PASTOR LEATHERMAN SINGING THE OFFRATORY. IF YOU ARE HEADED TOWARD PENN STATE THIS CHURCH IS JUST FIFTY MINUTES EAST. TRY IT – YOU WILL LIKE IT AND WANT TO STAY.

AFTERNOON OF THE 21ST A LADY FROM THE CHURCH WITH A THIRTY YEAR SON WHO IS A DRUG ADDICT ASK IF I WOULD MEET WITH HIM IN AN ATTEMPT TO LEAD HIM TO THE LORD. I MET WITH JOHN THIS AFTERNOON, HE SAID THAT HE HAD BEEN SAVED; I ASK HIM AND SHOWED HIM 11 COR 5:17 AND HE SAID THAT HE HAD NOT CHANGED WHEREUPON I SAID IN ALL PROBABILITY YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN SAVED. HE AGREED AND PRAYED WITH ME THAT THE LORD WOULD FORGIVE HIM AND SAVED HIM. WE WALKED BACK TO THE PASTOR’S HOME WITH JOHN NOW ON HIS WAY TO HEAVEN AND A PROMISE THAT HE WOULD BE IN THE SERVICE TONIGHT. PRAISE THE LORD!

Dr. Bro. Cofty stand out in my memory as the man who once in my hearing at Pensacola Christian College compared the ‘intelligence network’ of competing school Bob Jones University to that of Al-Qaeda. He was serious.

  1. Gotta be in awe at his “Dr Cofty at Play” page on his website, which displays pictures of himself fishing. So what’s next, Dr Cofty action figures?

  2. Stated in his biography:

The late Dr.’s Monroe Parker and Gilbert Stenholm, both stated, “that to see Dr. Cofty and hear him preach reminded them both of their good friend, Dr. Billy Sunday.”

  3. I had actually forgotten all about the “Intelligence Network” message. That was a trip.

  4. “Dr. Cofty at Play”

aka, “Pictures of me ‘n some dead critters fer yer viewin’ enjoyment”

    Well… Private Joker. I admire your honesty…

That’s the best laugh I’ve had in a while.

  6. Take into account that it was several years ago and I took no notes but basically the gist was this…

BJU is alleged to have a network of churches and para-church organizations who’s BJU alum members all report back to central command (BJU headquarters, I guess) about who is teaching/preaching/doing what out in the world. When someone gets out of line, BJU uses their clout to blackball that individual or church thereby cutting them off from the rest of the organization. This means that evangelists don’t get meetings, missionaries lose support, churches get kicked out of the ultimate Frisbee tournaments etc. etc.

He had a big chart showing various organizations and how they all related back to BJU as some kind of proof of this wide fundamentalist conspiracy of evil power.

Of course…PCC is reputed to do something similar only it’s cool because _they_ are just “standing for the truth.” BJU on the other hand is an evil empire bent on destroying the Word of God.

  7. @Darrell OOOOOOOOOO!!!! Enemies lists, that’s a legit SFL post for sometime! 🙂

  8. Does any fundamentalist preacher actually earn a doctor of divinity? Or are they all honorary?

    1. I had to see this page as a Google cache since he had already taken it down from his site. What a surprise. He talks about the evils of changing to be politically correct, yet when the pressure is on him for his racism, he suddenly tries deletes certain articles and statements…

  10. @Darrell I always think these sites are stupid pitiful people till I see BS (I typed the words, but edited them before posting) like that FILTH. Gonna be difficult for me not to hate Dr. Crofty now.

  11. From Darrell’s link “THIS COMMENT IS PROVIDED FOR THOUGHT, NOT ARGUMENTATION.”

How convenient. I’m going to go on a racist rant, but don’t judge me cause I’m just thinking out loud, and if you argue I’ll deny everything.

So about the post Darrell, I’m more interested with your last little comment about the Intelligence Network. I know you explained it, but wow! Seriously people thought this?

  12. When I read the “CENTERAL PENNSYLVANIA” and “COMPLETLY SURROUNDED BY LARGE MOUNTAINS” I thought maybe he had preached in the church I attended when I lived there. But then he wrote, “IF YOU ARE HEADED TOWARD PENN STATE THIS CHURCH IS JUST FIFTY MINUTES EAST.” and I relaxed. The church I attended was much closer to Penn State… and was (is still) pastored by a BJU grad, to boot! Whew!

  13. No, erally, Darrell, you found it. It’s yours. But if you don’t want it, I’ll take it. SUch malice and stupidity make a work of art.

  14. No, seriously, feel free to run with it. A link is about all I have the stomach to do with it here.

  15. JimE:

I thought the same thing but couldn’t figure out how to put it as simply as you did.

  16. From his blog:
CAPITOL BAPTIST CHURCH, DOVER, DE. THREE MORE SAVED TODAY. TWO ON VISITATION THIS AFTERNOON AND ONE IN THE SERVICE TONIGHT. I THINK THIS BRINGS TO TWENTY-FIVE OR SIX THE SOULS SAVED THIS WEEK. THE LORD HAS TO BE PLEASED AT THE EFFORT OF THIS GOOD CHURCH.

It’s all about the numbers. This is how fundys guage success: NUMBERS and lots of ’em.

Being a former Marine myself I know this guy is all about control. Control over people. Look at his field of study in college, Behavorial Science. That served him well in the Corps I am sure. And now the same techniques serve him well as a Fundy evangelist. I have no doubt that given the opportunity he is able to to coerce decisions out of people.

  17. It is my understanding that the Intelligence Network was trained by the Illuminati, Masons and Tri-lateral Commission and funded by the Rothchilds.

  18. @Ron Bean. Dastardly! I never would’ve suspected all of them in cahoots. No Catholics? I have a hard time believing the Pope wouldn’t be involved in this kind of conspiracy!

  19. I want to say this presentation was sometime around 2002-2003, perhaps in a Senior Class Meeting?

Although the term “BJU Footsoldier” had been well established on PCC campus long prior to that.

  20. Hmm. . . . maybe it’s just been repeated enough that it’s a common trope now. Like you say.

It’s not entirely untrue, as your Mob post a few weeks back indicates. But that’s how good myths get made, I guess.

  21. @ Camille
It’s interesting that Bob Jones can write an open letter to PCC dealing with a problem between the two of them, but if anyone has a problem with BJ it seems that it must be dealt with in private to meet scriptural qualifications.

    1. From what I’ve seen, almost all Fundy U’s are like that, BJU and PCC included. They can publicly bash anyone they want, but woe be unto the person or institution who does the same to them. The “scriptural” argument is only used when convenient.

  22. @Darrell I don’t think it was a senior class meeting; my brother (who went to PCC from 2004-07) called me one night and asked me if we had a network of BJU spies that reported to BJIII. He then explained why he was asking me that.

Gotta run – time to check in with the Big Boss Man himself.

  23. It’s interesting that Bob Jones can write an open letter to PCC dealing with a problem between the two of them, but if anyone has a problem with BJ it seems that it must be dealt with in private to meet scriptural qualifications.

To be fair, in this case the only adequate–but still diplomatic–response BJU could have offered was an open letter. PCC forfeited private discussion of differences when they released at least one video intended to shred BJU’s Bible translation position and mailed unsolicited copies to people on their mailing list.

  24. Oddly enough, my mother and I were converted during this man’s “revival” meetings at our church.

My father, however, was completely alienated by the man’s offensiveness,

Maybe fundies think 2 out of 3 ain’t bad?

  25. Jordan, thanks for putting the BJU-PCC conflict in perspective. I was in Florida (near PCC) at the time. When BJU responded, the PCC reaction was similar to that of a bully when someone calls their bluff.

  26. THIS GUY IS LIKE A WALKING PARODY OF FUNDAMENTALISM WITH HIS CAPS-LOCK AND MISSPLELINGS AND USE OF WORDS THAT ARE JUST A LITTLE TOO BIG FOR HIM TO UNDERSTAND BUT HE USES THEM ANYWAY IF HE ALWAYS USES ALL-CAPS WHAT DOES HE DO WHEN HE GETS ANGRY I SUSPICION THAT HE’S ALWAYS ANGRY

  27. Is this dude serious? “Holding the Cross higher than the Corps.” Really? You’d think with all these “souls being saved” the world would look a little differently. Maybe saving souls isn’t the goal.

  28. I’m always uneasy with the numbers game of “souls saved”. St. Paul said that we must “endure til the end” to be saved. Easy believism without an ongoing conversion of the heart just seems so wrong to me. Anyone can do a 1-2-3 repeat after me. But to be a true disciple of Christ is a whole different matter.

I was raised in a multi-racial family. The racism this man espouses is reprehensible.

  29. @ Morgan – so right!!! It’s what Paul called the daily death. Easy believeism, cheap grace? Ask Christ if it was easy.

  30. Nehemiah’s problem was that they were pagan wives turning the husbands to idolatry.
    Darrell- Bro. Dr. Cofty?

  31. @Jordan – I agree with you there. I just find it interesting that BJ doesn’t like being dealt with that way when they have big problems with someone.
