Being Affirmed By Their Enemies’ Hatred

You can’t be in fundamentalist circles for very long without hearing someone use the phrase “Well, if people like that hate me, then I must be doing something right.” What’s more, they actually say it with a straight face.

Evidently, it never occurs to the fundy who proudly propounds this fallacious phrase that the reason why people hate him may not be that he stand for the truth but rather that he’s simply a crass and unpleasant person to be around and people would hate him no matter what his religious affiliation.

If after cutting someone off in traffic you can convince yourself that the real reason they’re honking and yelling at you is that they dislike your “In Case of Rapture This Car Will Be Unoccupied” bumper sticker…you might be a fundamentalist.

thanks to deedeedub over on the FFF for the idea

  1. This reminds me of the comment that, “if the devil is getting on my case, I’m headed in the right direction!”

Here’s the saddest thing…I used to say both of those things. Ugh.

  2. Martyr complex!

I love it when people who disagree with me sneer antagonistically at me. It makes me feel like I’m in a B list action film.

It just wouldn’t be a battle for Christ without the villainous arch-nemeses.

  3. I remember at least one PCC evangelist saying that. It’s easy to pit yourself against someone when they are not around to sa why they hate you.

  4. So true. Fundamentalists so often read 1 Peter 4:14,16 while failing to read the verse BETWEEN them:

14 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name.

  5. I guess the flipside is that if certain groups, most notably the Rooman Catholic Church, accepts what you say, do, sing, etc, then it CAN’T be of God….

    1. You found an old post from 2009. The readership has definitely grown since then!

        1. Well, if we keep posting to this we have, in essence, resurrected it for some more pithy, intellectual, and amusing comments. Or even trolls.

  6. Jim “Amos” Standridge gives us a prime example of this in his latest posting. He is God’s Amos for this place and time. It is what the Carnal mind is saying about him and the Fleshly pen is writing about him. God had a long talk about these things with Jim in the shower.

Amazing how Jim’s “revelation” gives him an out for having to answer for his actions on the national stage. 🙄

  7. Sorry Mr fundamentalist. The world does not hate you because of your faith or because you are holy. The world hates you because you are an arrogant self-righteous, hypocritical small-minded pathetic troll.
