Yeah, I've seen and heard that happening a number of times. When I was at BJU I heard a number of lectures from male seminary students about how it wasn't appropriate for women to be discussing such things. I've known MOg's who wouldn't even speak to women. It was quite clear from their attitude they considered it beneath them to do so. And, of course, in the defense of men in general, I've also known MOg's who wouldn't even talk to another man unless he was a fellow MOg. They had apparently reached an even higher spiritual plain than the ordinary ones.

Behold, what manner of love is this, that Christ should be arraigned and we adorned; that the curse should be laid on His head and the crown set on ours. –Thomas Watson

Hey! Guess what? You all are surrounded by women here! Why not ask them what their experience and take on this is? Tongue

It's a bit weird to have an argument going on between two men about women's experiences ... surrounded by stories of actual women's experiences.

Ack! My bad. I didn't read Historian's post carefully enough, and was irked by Jordan's dig against Marxist scholarship.

I hate cutesy stuff. My house is decorated with bookcases and Asian/British artifacts. My office is done in vintage Doctor Who.

That's not what I said. I just think automatically ascribing the kind of taste many Fundy--and non-Fundy--women have as some kind of top-down, Marxist-model male conspiracy to keep women placated with doilies and play-pretties leads to morbid paranoia.

Also note that I said I was speaking from my own limited and therefore subjective experiences and my understanding of the people I know. This:

Quote:The problem is when from their earliest years (as is the case in much of the fundy world) the women are encouraged in them as if that's all they can do

is not my experience. I don't doubt it's the case in some places; I'm just trying to suggest that a woman with a collection of Precious Moments figurines is not necessarily a victim of the patriarchy.

Jordan,
Ditto. Many a time it is over looked that women just like that kind of stuff and there is no one at the helm with whip in hand making sure they do girly stuff. My wife is Hello Kitty-knitting-cute-things all the way and my girls like the cute stuff too. All around campus I'm sure you see the evidences of the girly...thank goodness.

My wife loves cute/romance. While I have been playing Counter Strike Zombie Escape mod for the last week, she has been watching and rewatching Sense & Sensibility (both the recent BBC and the Hugh Grant one), Pride and Prejudice (BBC and Newer movie), Emma (Gwyneth version and Kate Beckinsale made for TV version) and the entire Janette Oak series by Michael Landon Jr (which I bought her for Christmas).

My wife is not a fundmentalist. However, she did say she would have loved to have lived during that time, but she would probably be royalty, while I would be a lowly smith.

RE: Girly Cutesy-isms
How about how the guys always got to talk about really racy stuff, and we were always lectured about modesty and...ugh...chastity. Seriously, we get the message. Can we talk about something else, now?

OH! And how the guys always got Lord of the Rings marathons and paintballing, but we got stuck with lame makeovers, sleepovers, and Anne of Green Gables marathons. Don't get me wrong, I actually like Anne of Green Gables. But I'm sure Anne would agree with me on this one.

We all have our own inner angry natives and our minds invent a million ways to avoid confronting them directly. But if you just look them in the eye and ask them why they're chasing you with spears you just might learn something about yourself.
