Most interpretations that I've heard were that Paul's choice of words indicated "keep on being filled with the Spirit" as a perpetual process and not a singular event. And yes, your observations are spot on- "holy" people whether an IFB mog or a "Holy Ghost baptized with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues" Pentecostal can act like the devil. We're all human and we all fail.

On that note I'll continue our conversation but redirect it back to your topic- awkward moment.

I attended a Church of God (Cleveland, TN) and the pastor was true to the denominational historical beliefs of a 2nd and 3rd blessing- the 2nd being instantaneous sanctification. The pastor would talk openly from the pulpit about how many years he had gone without sin. Eventually a pal of mine called him out on it and said "if any man says he has no sin he is a liar and the truth is not in him." The pastor got rather flumoxed, said my friend misunderstood the verse, and walked away in a huff.
