RE: More Billy Sunday...
I don't get the obsession with Sunday. Was he the first big showman preacher or something? Having said that - as a fundamental baptist, I listed billy sunday as one of my favourite preachers, despite never having heard or read a word of what he said.
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; - Titus 2:11-12 |

The old Sawdust trial revivalist, the master of the Crusade Altar Call. Counted over a million heads at the altar calls over the years. Rarely see him preaching from Scripture but the always see him preaching a social gospel.... usually against demon alcohol. Thanks to Billy and the Temperance movement teaming up in the early 20th century hundreds of Baptist churches have the Alcohol Abstinance clause in their constitutions and bylaws even today. Quote:I'm always amused when I see someone setting up an "old fashioned tent revival" somewhere outdoors in the summertime. I live in SC and I'm wondering who exactly is gonna sit out in the heat and mosquitoes and listen to someone yell at them? Everyone goes to Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show! And to see Dr Phil Kidd's Fighting Fundie Brusharbor Revivals.

RE: More Billy Sunday...
I read a short biography on Billy Sunday that was published, I believe, by BJU. I read it when I was still fundy and sincerely seeking godly examples to live by.
I was really disappointed to read that while he and his wife traveled the country they left their kids with a nanny, and all of his kids died tragic deaths, at least one alcohol related. |

RE: More Billy Sunday...
I've got a series of Christian biographies called "Heroes of the Faith"; I've planned on reading them with my kids so they can learn about great Christians of the past. However, I've learned that Finneyis someone I'd have a lot of theological differences with and there may be more. I don't like to throw out the books, but I don't want my kids thinking that some of these were great men of faith when maybe all they did was "preachertainment." Maybe I should read them but with qualifications.
Here's the book, one of many in a series: http://www.amazon.com/Charles-Finney-Gre...d_sim_b_10 (By the way, one of the things I hope we can do in heaven is hear the stories of the unknown heroes of the faith, people who loved God and served Him unnoticed and overlooked on earth, but who will be recognized in heaven.) "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

PW check out some of these links for Finney: http://www.spurgeon.org/~phil/articles/finney.htm http://www.mtio.com/articles/aissar81.htm or http://www.modernreformation.org/default...&var4=home http://www.suite101.com/content/the-life..._print.cfm Finney is revered by the Revivalist Crowd. Those are the ones I call Religious Junkies who are looking for their fix of Spiritual experientialism. The greatest Emotional, Spiritual Experience in the relms of Religion is the "REVIVAL." Finney ran through the New England area so much with revivalism that even today it is know as the "burned over district." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burned-over_district "There is no worse heresy than the fact that the office sanctifies the holder of it.” -from Lord Acton's Axiom “Yippee ki-yay, Mother Fundamentalist” |

The more I read about Americanized Christianity the less I care for these "Old (American) Paths." Scofield, Finney, Sunday, Ham, the Jones, Roloff, Hyles, Rice, Falwell, Graham and a host of other empire builders. Maybe God has used some of them, that is not for me to say. I know I do not hold any of these I have named in any higher regard than I do any other Brother or Sister in Christ. (and most on my list I hold in lower esteem if not in out right comtempt.)
