RE: Overcoming Depression the Jay Adams Way
@Jenn...interesting. Wow, those booklets...can he be serious? You mean all that I learned in college psychology about brain chemistry is wrong? Amazing.
I'll be done being sarcastic with Mr. Adams now. One reason I am leaving my church. One of things taught was that any form of depression was your own fault. Try harder. Pray harder. Smile. Suck it up. Be joyful. Blahhhh!!!! I have battled depression, anxiety, and OCD. It didn't get better when I tried to pray more fervently. In fact, I think some of those suggestions made my OCD WORSE. What did help? Getting on medication for about 18 months so my brain chemistry balanced out. Learning the truth about OCD..that it is brain chemistry and "wiring." That is what helped me. Not some drivel about how I was under demonic attack or was not somehow trying hard enough. What helped my depression? A lot of exercise, vitamin D, and artificial sunlight in the winter..again, all meant to restore proper brain chemistry. I feel good again and it's not because some pamphlet told me to have more self discipline. And I thank God for putting people with a brain in their head in psychologist's offices, counselors offices, and research universities so they could learn the REAL reason why people's brains don't always work properly. |
