RE: Least Favorite Sermon?
Sensual clothing? Watching what "the world" watches? Hm....
I would agree with a lot of what he says and his theology, but he's a very heavy handed preacher... without a whole lot of grace. |

RE: Least Favorite Sermon?
The message in it's entirety lead me to a dark, lonely part of my life. And his followers are worse. They sit on the net waiting for their next washer fix, only to repeat his choice lines as though they were scripture. Every one of his followers have nothing better to do but make videos about how everyone who has ever prayed a prayer is going to hell, or how everyone who has ever struggled with sin is probably not saved.
I have seen recent interviews with Paul Washer where he, in a subtle way, rejects that message that he taught. He explains that repentance is not perfect, that it is a change of mind, and that when he was saved, he was more concerned with the love of God for him, then with his love for God. He explains that the message was very off the cuff, unprepared and he preached it because he saw a mosh pit at a church event. For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; - Titus 2:11-12 |

What I found in fundydom was that we wanted the rules so that we would know what we could and couldn't do while maintaining our Christian pedigree. When you apply the standard described in scripture, it's both liberating and challenging. As for how women should dress, the issue isn't whether it's four inches below the ankle or if you have pants, it's what are you trying to accomplish with your choice of clothing. And it's possible to follow the fundy rules while still trying to be "sensual" (i.e., appeal to certain senses). As for watching what "the world" watches, I agree he may have resorted to a cliche there, but if I take his point as being "Are you amusing yourself by watching other people act out the same sins that Jesus died for", it causes me to be more actively engaged in selecting my entertainment. I appreciate the challenge. As for the lack of grace...I see your point. Back to my original point...I don't think Paul Washer is accepted in most IFB institutions. |

RE: Least Favorite Sermon?
No way is he accepted. Maybe I didn't read the original post. I just saw "least favourite sermon" and posted my two least favourite. Ray Comfort and Washer were the first two non IFB preachers I experienced, and after being under legalism for such a long time, and coming out to hear Comfort's non gospel of law keeping being pushed by those who kept ridiculing the IFB church for it's standards, it was a blow to the gut that sent me down for the count.
