Need music ideas... I am CCM illiterate
First, do only fundies call it CCM, and if so, what do real people call it?

Now, for my real question: Do you have any suggestions of music to check out as I slowly break out of the shackles of Fundyland? I like the Gettys and the Gaithers, but they are pretty much all I know. Keep it tame for now as I get my feet wet. From my friends' teenagers, I know Lecrae is a bit too much for me. Big Grin

I would recommend Casting Crowns. Their song "Voice of Truth" was one that really started me listening to CCM. I also enjoy Stephen Curtis Chapman and Chris Tomlin. Tenth Avenue North's music helped get me through a very dark year. Their lyrics spoke truth to my soul.

I heard Lecrae live at a Rock and Worship Roadshow, and while I respect his message, his music isn't my style!

One idea: if you hear a song you like, type it into http://www.pandora.com That website will play it (if they have it) and then find songs like it. You can thumbs up or thumbs down what you hear and you'll get lots of good ideas about songs and artists that you like.

"Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan.

Laura Story would be another good listen. She wrote "Indescribable" which has been recorded by many artists now.

"Great God Who Saves" and "Blessings" are two of her newer albums. She won a Grammy for "Blessings." Before she hit the "big time" she would play at our Women's retreats. She still comes back to our church and does a concert every now and then.

Selah "Bless the Broken Road" is a good album. They have amazing vocals and have a little bit of country tendency. They also do some gorgeous covers of old hymns.

I agree with Presbygirl--Laura Story is really good.

Chris Tomlin "See the Morning" album is a favorite--his version of "Amazing Grace" is a personal favorite of mine. Just about any of his albums are good.

Matt Redman has a newer song "10,000 Reasons"--he has a lot of good albums too.

Most outside of the fundy bubble call it "praise and worship" or whatever other genre it is, Christian rap, Christian heavy metal, etc. If you say CCM in front of non-fundies, they'll ask you what you're talking about. Smile

I like the group Glad.

You can put gospel groups or contemporary christian in the browser in youtube and see what comes up. That way you can see what you like before you spend money on music.

Oh, and I like Johnny Cash for gospel music b/c he's done both traditional hymns and written some of his own.

How about some pagan bluegrass?

Glad is an awesome group but I've only heard them Acapella. Actually, Rockapella is even better! Big Grin

Thanks so much for all the ideas! I have checked out many of them on iTunes and Pandora, and I think I can get into them. Smile When I get a chance, I'll go to the library and see if there are any CDs to borrow too.

I used to attend the same church as one of the members of Glad. I can't remember which musician it was....but we both attended a 'Fellowship' church here in Winchester. Nice guy.
