A Biblical Look at Social Media
Saw this on the website from the newspaper back home.
Pastor pens book - biblical look at Social Media Pastor Tom McMurtry from Lighthouse Baptist Church recently had a book published, “Facing the Truth,” which he describes as “a biblical look at today’s social media.” For details, check http://bookstore.authorhouse.com/Product...Truth.aspx or http://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/Dr—Tom-m...-The-Truth or call (815) 228-8696. RE: A Biblical Look at Social Media
Didn't read the book but did check out the reviews. One reviewer states...
Speaking of Facebook and social networks. "He has thoroughly challenged us to see how Satan is using this to be everything from a distraction in our walk with God, to many demonstrating a life of self centeredness, and sadly for some, the disgrace of delving into sin." I guess everyone here is being used of Satan. Same old stuff. Something new has come along for this generation, let's condemn it as evil. |

Why do fundies love seeing something someone else is doing and immediately thinking of all the EVIL that could result? How about this: God is using social networks as believers encourage one another, reconnect with friends they've lost touch with, do on-line Bible studies (I've been involved in one that's been a real blessing), and expose sin in the church publically instead of hiding and excusing it. Quote: Same old stuff. Something new has come along for this generation, let's condemn it as evil. That's it in a nutshell. "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

RE: A Biblical Look at Social Media
I'm so sick of these so-called 'Biblical' looks at things. Chapter and verse that directly deals with FB as opposed to anything else? No, I didn't think so. FB is no different from the old telephone party lines except with pictures. Automobiles can be used for no-good. So can the printing press. And cameras. One-on-one talking can be evil -- just look at Schaap. I have been blessed by social media -- while it hasn't eliminated the darkness I have sometimes faced, it has made it easier to bear.[/font]

RE: A Biblical Look at Social Media
PW, I think for the quote from the reviewer, "delving into sin" may equal "exposing sin in the church publically".

I'll answer with two paraphrases: "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he," and "A good man brings forth good and an evil brings forth evil for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." So I'll hazard a guess and say because so many fundies have dirty minds they assume everyone has dirty minds. |

The reviewer saw people on fb discussing sin in the church and thought it was BAD from the connotation to "delving" as if digging into things that aren't your business. But public sin seems to merit public rebuke, as Paul did many times in the NT. So the content on facebook remains the same - the sin of Christians discussed - but the reviewer saw it as evil whereas it COULD be seen as a positive thing. "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

RE: A Biblical Look at Social Media
I was able to read the first two chapters on the google site. A lot of bad personal stories and random out of context Bible verses.
I had a friend who went to this guys church. They had a work day and she had signed up to clean the light fixtures. She went in pants becaus me she was going to be on a ladder. She got in trouble. Then her God fearing husband left her and their baby for a woman from the Philipines. |

RE: A Biblical Look at Social Media
Fundamentalists are terrified of social media, because they can try and own the media, lawyers, and police, but they can't do a damned thing about social media. It is being used in a big way to expose their evils, so they have to at least keep their own away from it.
