SOOOO good.

"Higher" standards in entertainment, music, and clothing styles, but definitely lower standards from many of them in kindness, gentleness, patience, believing the best about others, as well as all those things you mention.

As for honesty, I was just at a rummage sale at a United Methodist Church, and I saw a poster on the wall with an acrostic defining Gospel that included we cannot save ourselves, Jesus died for our sins, and we must trust Him. All my life I was told that mainline denominations don't teach true salvation: at least with this church THAT WAS A LIE.

For nearly all my life, I went around thinking that I was a true believer and all those people at non-IFB churches were poor, deluded, worldly, possibly unsaved souls. That is a patently dishonest thing to teach to children.

"Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan.

Everyone here has spoken Truth here and brings up lots of memories when my attitude as a fundie were people "outside the camp" were less than me--they call that subjugation.
I like the part of the quote that calls for piousness to transform sin into righteousness.

This is why the fundies are yelling that Schaap just "made a mistake, fell..." like it is some error one would make as a secretary such as forgetting to date a message or filing a document in the wrong file. What Schaap did was a crime--against this girl, her family, FBC members, Mrs. Schaap, children, grandchildren, HAC members....sheesh.Sad

God help me soul, this week I have been looking at journals I wrote during my time at HAC and what I see is what I do not like about fundies. Guilty for sure.

RE: Fundies "higher standards"
I absolutely agree. But would point out that I've also known some fundies who aren't prideful and pious, hateful and judgmental. I've also known some who are just genuinely ignorant about Scripture, and have no idea how to interpret what they do read or how to apply it to their lives, but want desperately to obey God. I feel so sorry for them, and shudder at the heavy burden of responsibility their shepherds and parents and school teachers carry for having taught them such error and then tried to keep them in ignorance.

And I've also known some who are clearly desperately trying to work their way to heaven, and live in constant misery over whether they will ever make it. They sing about Jesus every week, but know nothing of His mercy and grace. It is so terribly sad.

Behold, what manner of love is this, that Christ should be arraigned and we adorned; that the curse should be laid on His head and the crown set on ours. –Thomas Watson

RE: Fundies "higher standards"
Historian,

Thank you for reminding us that our enemy is NOT the IFB church as a whole, or any other church, for that matter.

I continue visiting churches from all denominations, and have found the Spirit of the Lord moving, in one way or another, in each one of the churches I visit, regardless of denomination.

Yes, if I look hard enough I can also find plenty to disagree with in ANY church I visit. But after many years of always looking for the negatives, I was finally led to a different attitude, to "take what I need, and leave the rest."

In this Spirit I have found enjoying my visits not only to IFB churches but Pentecostal, Catholic, Adventists and even, gasp, Jehovah's Witnesses!

For every difficult and complicated question there is an answer that is simple, easily understood and wrong." H.L. Mencken

No surprise as Colossians 2 said such rules are not effective.

Col 2
20 If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— 21 “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” 22 ( referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings? 23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

Elementary, Watson.
