Interesting Observation
So, I was goofing off on YouTube the other night and came across some hypnotism vids. Was curious, so I listened. No, they didn't make me bark like a dog.
But, I was really taken back by how closely they resemble the invitations we had growing up in church. The music, the pastor's voice softened. No, wonder we were all brainwashed. They were hypnotizing us!!!!

RE: Interesting Observation
I believe you are closer to the truth than many realize.

RE: Interesting Observation
Yup, absolutely. There are many hypnotic elements involved.

RE: Interesting Observation
Thinking back to my days growing up in fundyville, and the things I've seen on tv, etc. I can't see any other explanation for some of the things folks do in those services other than some sort of hypnotic suggestion.
Not all who wander are lost. |

RE: Interesting Observation
I was always confused (okay, not confused, more like "what the what??!!") b/c we were taught from the pulpit that songs that repeated themselves, such as sinful choruses sung at some churches, were bad. Yet, an invitation would easily include all verses of Just as I Am.....two or three times (or more!). Standing for an invitation was the only thing keeping us awake. It's not a great leap to compare the trance of a long invitation to hypnosis.
PS I tried hypnosis for weight-loss. PSS I'm still fat!! |

I used to hear preachers accusing contemporary and charismatic churches of practicing emotional manipulation but wasn't that exactly what was happening during invitations, especially those done by visiting evangelists who needed the big numbers to advertise their own "effectiveness" and continue getting gigs? "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

RE: Interesting Observation
This used to confuse me too.

RE: Interesting Observation
In IFC churches, we were not supposed to question what we were told. Comparing the "sins" of other churches to practices in our own church was not allowed; it was being critical and judgmental.
"Just believe what we tell you and nobody will get hurt." |
