Homemade Yogurt
Homemade yogurt in a slow cooker
Gallon of milk, I use whole 1 small container of plain yogurt Slow Cooker Heavy towel Coffee filters or cheesecloth Mesh strainer Start with a gallon of milk, cook on low 3-3 1/2 hours, until it reaches 180 degrees. Turn off heat and cool to 110 degrees. Remove 1-2 cups of liquid and stir in a small container of plain yogurt. Dump the yogurt mixture back into your slow cooker. Cover with a heavy towel and leave for 6-8 hours, overnight works well. Strain yogurt using coffee filter or several layers of cheesecloth to make thick, yummy, Greek yogurt. Sweeten with sugar, honey, Splenda, etc. we add fruit and granola. You can use the leftover whey in baking, protein shakes, make ricotta cheese with it, or give it to your dog. It has helped my pug from shedding as much. Pay attention people! WifeofBill knows of which she speaks - Scorpio

That's so cool WOB! Do you know how to make home made cheese too? That would be sweet...being able to make grilled cheese sandwiches any time you want.

RE: Homemade Yogurt
Never tried making cheese. I've made pimento cheese and made grilled cheese from that. Yummy.

RE: Homemade Yogurt
Here's how to do it without a slow cooker: http://annies-eats.com/2012/03/08/diy-greek-yogurt/
(This is the way my mom always made it.) And for sweetener she'd dump in a can of cherry pie filling. "It doesn't help to wear a hat on your head if your posterior is exposed." ~ PW "Don't make crazy your normal and then wonder why nobody agrees with you." ~ EC |

RE: Homemade Yogurt
Wow, Annie's eats way is way too much effort.
I make my own yogurt every week, and it takes less than 5 minutes of active time. Basically the same idea as annies-eats, but a lot quicker with an easiyo yogurt maker. http://www.easiyo.com/easiyo-products/yo...dware.html They sell these packets you can buy with the cultures already added. But I just use plain yogurt (greek, usually). I buy a small carton, dump it into the inner container and fill with milk. Then I boil some water, pour it into the larger container, throw the smaller container in, put on the top and wait about 18 hours.
