"Appearance of evil"?
I don't really know where this thread should go, but I really want to know the answer to this. If fundies are supposed to stay away from evil and evil-appearing things, why does the Beka phonics program use the clue word "smoke" for the special sound "sm"? Why can't they use the word "smile"? The picture they use is of smoke coming out a chimney, but what if you don't see the picture?
Yeah, it's Monday morning and I haven't had enough sleep the last several nights. |

I mean, every fundy knows what a cigarette is because the evils of them are so often preached. However, I'm not sure any of them have ever heard of smiling. "I follow K.I.S.S. theology. Keep It Simple cause I'm Stupid. 1. Trust and Love God. 2. Love others. These 2 K.I.S.S. beliefs cover 99% of my decision making processes. The remaining 1% are covered by mental illness". - JimE |

RE: "Appearance of evil"?
Do they use "Chuck" for "ch" and "Phelps" for "ph"?
Those guys abstain from the appearance of evil when it suits them (ie when they can use it to control others) only. Our love is the digital transfer of information ![]()

RE: "Appearance of evil"?
That's one of the problems with the whole trying to avoid all appearance of evil: it's impossible. Early in our marriage, my husband and I figured out the ridiculousness of fundy horror at being seen walking out of a movie theater but their complete indifference at being seen walking out of a video store, despite the fact that NO ONE KNEW WHAT VIDEOS THEY WERE RENTING. Avoiding the appearance of evil became just a way of condemning and controlling other believers, as they would pick and choose which things were "worldly" and which they didn't care about. I've only recently started noticing that they were always concerned about stylish clothes being "worldly", but never seemed to think that the newest model of vehicle was worldly.
If the hypocrisy doesn't drive you crazy, it can actually be pretty amusing to notice all the ways fundies fail the "separation" test. "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

RE: "Appearance of evil"?
When one understands that verse as "Avoid evil every time it appears", things get a lot easier.

I was just amused at how the people who make up all kinds of rules about behavior that might appear evil would use the word "smoke" when it could mean something evil to others. There is no possible way to obey the verse as the KJV people intend it, because there is always something we might do that could appear evil to others. I mean, what if someone mistakes that artificial vanilla extract I bought for the real stuff and wigs out because I purchased alcohol? Or the long skirt I'm wearing is denim and not some ugly polyester print? |

Smoking or Non-Somoking?" The tract is in here... somewhere... if you care to look for it. *shudder* http://jesus-is-savior.com/ "There is no worse heresy than the fact that the office sanctifies the holder of it.” -from Lord Acton's Axiom “Yippee ki-yay, Mother Fundamentalist” |
