RE: Do You Love Superheroes?
Quote:A LOT of women on here who are comic book geeks?? I LOVE you!! ![]() I remember when LoTR first came out and all these WOMEN came out of the woodwork and reviewers and social commentators were at a loss to understand it. They could understand the teen-age girls drooling over Legolas/Hobbits/Aragorn whoever...but these grown mature WOMEN? The idea that they read these books as children didn't dawn on them. Its the same with the comic books. You would be surprised how many female fans are out there. O Beauty ever ancient, O Beauty ever new; you, the mirror of my life renewed, let me find my life in you.~St. Augustine |

Just watched "The Dark Knight Rises". Really liked it.
"Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

RE: Do You Love Superheroes?
Grew up a very sheltered PK, like PW there was no TV growing up and comic book where deemed unsuitable for Christians, mostly because of the immodest costumes, violence, and other dreaded worldly elements. However I loved mythology, fairy tales (read and now own all the Andrew Lang fairy tale books), fantasy in general and comic books always felt like modern/near future version of that type of literature.
I discovered comics in my early teens, I remember the moment vividly, I was browsing the book aisle of a local Kmart and picked up a kid's version of Jubilee's introduction to the X-men, it was love at first sight. After that I would covertly read any X-men comics I could get my hands on and eventually expanded to the other comics. My enjoyment took a nose dive when favorite characters started getting killed off or turning evil, alternate universes started popping up like mushrooms, and story lines became more convoluted than a MOG's sermon. Never really regained my enjoyment of comics though I've enjoyed the current batch of super hero movies. |

Yes, even from the little bit of comic exposure I've had, I've seen how good characters turn bad, bad good, or an entire story line is not "real" and I got tired of that. It seemed at times that the writers (or sellers) don't care about the actual character sometimes, but only want to sell more comics, so they violate the essential elements of a hero's character in order to have a shocking or interesting storyline. RE: Do You Love Superheroes?
I grew up when liking Superhero comic books was social suicide, and I read a lot of X-men and Spiderman comics and copped flack for it. It's interesting now that if you don't like superheroes, you are the weirdo (I have never seen the second batman film and don't really care to).
I still read comics. Grace means that God does something for me; law means that I do something for God. God has certain holy demands which he places upon me: that is law. Now if law means that God requires something of me for their fulfillment, then deliverance means he no longer requires that from me, but himself provides it. |
