The Wheel of Time Cycle by Robert Jordan
I'm of the opinion that Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time cycle should be renamed the Wheel of Pointless Anger.

Anger is the default emotion for EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. in these stories. Eyes flash daggers. Cheeks Flush. Bosoms Heave. And that's just the dudes.

I know Jordan tries hard to give good reasons for all this unfettered rage but it just comes across as forced. Perhaps it's most unbelievable because most of it seems directed at The Wheel itself for giving the protagonists (gasp) SUPER POWERS.

What's this?? I have the ability to do MAGIC! NOOOOOO! I can talk with wolves and get super strength from them? HOW DARE YOU, FATE!!! I can be the most powerful human being EVAR!?? I SHAKE MY FIST AT YOU AND SPIT OUT WEIRD CURSES ABOUT LIGHT AND STUFF!

It just doesn't make sense. You take any twelve teenagers who have a whole life of tending sheep ahead of them and ask them if they want to become Superman and you'll have a full dozen volunteers for the job. I suppose the constant inner reluctance and impotent rage goes a long way to proving that this writing is fantasy in more ways than one.

Ha, that's very true. I've enjoyed some parts of those books, but the anger does irritate me, too. It's like anger is the only emotion he knew how to draw accurately, so he was forced to pad out the novels with lots of it. Channeling makes them all feel good, as well as gives them extraordinary power, yet they all view it as this horrible burden they didn't ask for. It is weird.

Not as weird as Jorden's possible spanking fetish...but weird.

lol. There's definitely some wish fulfillment fantasy happening with the whole harem thing Rand has going on.

Oh yeah. At first I thought it could be nothing, but it keeps coming up in his books, and the descriptions get more and more detailed.

I had a hard time keeping all the characters straight. There were too many.

you, the mirror of my life renewed,
let me find my life in you.~St. Augustine

Every once in a while, I think "I should re-read the series so I can read the final three books." Then I remind myself that way lies madness.

Who is Robert Jordan? The only Robert Jordan I know was a fundy preacher in Lansdale, PA. Started Calvary Baptist church and Seminary. A fundy lite church.

RE: The Wheel of Time Cycle by Robert Jordan
Since Robert Jordan died, the last two books have been co-authored by Brandon Sanderson. My husband, who has read all the books, tells me he wraps up a lot of pointless dangling plots and keeps the action moving. Both of my older sons are right now plowing their way through that series. I got bored and wandered off.
