School vouchers and the law of unintended consequences
http://m.livingstonparishnews.com/mobile...963f4.html
Essentially... Louisiana just passed a school voucher law that allows religious schools to receive vouchers. This representative voted for it, then was shocked to find that the vouchers would be available to Islamic schools as well. Quote:“I actually support funding for teaching the fundamentals of America’s Founding Fathers’ religion, which is Christianity, in public schools or private schools,” the District 64 Representative said Monday. RE: School vouchers and the law of unintended consequences
Hardcore folks are more than likely to send their kids to a religious school whether they are Fundys, Catholics, Jews, or Muslims. Now the state of Louisana is going to help them pay for it.

I'm all for school choice. I don't really care if the school is religious or secular but competition always tends to create a better product.

That danged ol' Constitution thingy just keeps getting in the way and mucking things up for the "Old Path 1611 Christian Nation" folks now don't it?

It would be hypocrisy to fund one religion and not another.

I like the idea of making it easier for people to choose where their kids are educated. I'm not sure the state should be directly funding either school though. I think maybe a tax break for those who use private schools makes more sense - it's their money, they can put it where they want. I used to be 100% pro voucher. Now I think back to some of the abysmal fundy schools my contemporaries went to and the thought of my money going through the government to those schools just kind of skeezes me out. I wonder how the conservatives who promote these programs will feel about their money going to an Islamic madrasah. RE: School vouchers and the law of unintended consequences
I think there needs to be more choices when it comes to schools. We purposefully bought into a good school district only to have our elementary school become severely overcrowded from poor planning and from bussing kids in from failing schools. To get our kids into another school we have a few options, we can move, we can send them to private school, homeschool, or hope they are picked in the lottery for one of the few charter schools in our county.
I wouldn't be opposed to vouchers if there were minimum standards that had to be met in order to receive the voucher. Pay attention people! WifeofBill knows of which she speaks - Scorpio
