Off fundy family names
Has anyone else noted the phenomenon of fundies naming all their kids after Bible characters, except one? There'll be one odd-man-out in their brood, named after an uncle, a grandmother or a MOG somewhere. So the names run like:

Reuben, David, Ruth and Chuck.

or

Esther, Joshua, Joseph, Rachel, Simeon, Martha, Rebecca, Sarah, Jonathan, Peter, Caleb and Beatrice.

Also, in my experience I don't recall many fundy girls named "Mary." Is this just my imagination, or are they terrified of Catholics so much that they won't even name their kids after one of the most significant women in the Bible (but they'll name their poor son "Nahum" without blinking an eye)?

My (former) church supported a missionary family to New Guinea. The first letters of their kids' names spelled "JESUS". Then, Surprise! they had another, so they decided that they would have to have more children to spell out "Christ" as well. However, they named child number 8 "Rist" so they could stop.

I knew some Baptist Mary's.

The thought of a Greg being named after a Catholic Pope is kinda funny.

What's in a name, though? Paul mentioned a Christian named Apollos.

Uh...don't think my parents were quite fundy when they started reproducing but you described my siblings names. I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Only my oldest sister (second born child) doesn't have a Bible first name.

My son has a Biblical name but not my daughters. I'm fonder of the choices for men's names in Scripture than women's.

"Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan.

No, plenty of people have Biblical names for their kids, when they aren't fundy. And plenty of people who aren't fundy give their kids ridiculous names, too.

It just seemed this phenomenon of all–Bible–but–one names is really common among fundies.
