Then I guess parents who don't vaccinate or send their kids to government re-education centers are bad then

Parents who don't vaccinate (with some very few, medically specific, exceptions) are the worst. The end. There's a reason causes of death in the civilized world are no longer smallpox, measles, diphtheria, whooping cough, and polio. Vaccinations. In order to maintain society-wide freedom from these diseases, society depends upon herd immunity. Those whose immune systems are too weak for vaccinations or are below the age of vaccination, or are compromised depend on herd immunity. Herd immunity depends on the vast majority of people being immunized. Immunizations are immensely important, not just for individual children (yes, you can die from whooping cough, measles, and chicken pox. My uncle's organs and hearing were permanently damaged from a case of the mumps), but for the entire society. Quit listening to fear-mongers and conspiracy theorists. Children need to be vaccinated unless there is some very present, pressing medical reason they are physically unable to be (feel perfectly free to stretch out the vaccination schedule a few months if you wish, but it needs to be done).
Forget the fear/it's just a crutch/that tries to hold you back/and turn your dreams to dust. |

RE: Barely Literate? How Christian Fundamentalist Homeschooling Hurts Kids
In Australia, the first time they added the swine flu vaccine in with the seasonal flu vaccine, forty children in Western Australia were hospitalised with febrile convulsions and one previously healthy child in Queensland died before the vaccine was stopped. This isn't hearsay or gossip, it was headline news. They cancelled the vaccine over it (or blocked it for under fives, can't remember which).
So, 'good' parents make their perfectly healthy children risk death in order to prevent them from getting a disease they may never get and which modern medicine can now treat well in most cases? The issues aren't always black and white. There are pros and cons to both sides of the situation. In the middle are good parents trying to make hard decisions for their kids without the benefit of hindsight. Stop demonising those who disagree with you. I'm not immune to rubella (German measles) despite getting the vaccine a half dozen times over my life. It's just not going to take.
I very much appreciate the herd immunity.

Was it a live virus? What were they reacting to? The majority of vaccines that have been around for a while are very safe. Quote:So, 'good' parents make their perfectly healthy children risk death in order to prevent them from getting a disease they may never get and which modern medicine can now treat well in most cases? Again, most vaccines aren't 'live' and the risks are extremely small. Your child is more likely to be critically injured in a car accident than from a vaccine. The #1 reason I hear people around me say they don't vac their kids are because of herd immunity or some crackpot theory regarding thermisol. Children aren't getting the disease now because of herd immunity from the people who are vaccinated. It only takes ONE INFECTED PERSON to completely destroy that. You are right, parents who decide to not vac shouldn't be demonized. At the same time, they need to admit that their decision carries great risk for their children and the people around them.
