Quote:The study...found that 43 percent of immigrants who have been in the U.S. at least 20 years were using welfare benefits, a rate that is nearly twice as high as native-born Americans and nearly 50 percent higher than recent immigrants.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012...mmigrants/
http://cis.org/node/3876#poverty

The rate of poverty among Hispanic immigrants is 62.2% (47.6 for all immigrants.) So OF COURSE the rate of welfare recipients among immigrants is going to be twice as high.

That is like saying that 80% of the car accidents happen within three miles of your home. Duh! 80% of all cars ARE within three miles from their homes, so of course that is where the accidents will happen.

It is going to take some time and effort to REALLY look at those statistics. It is a VERY long study, it would appear as though they are picking and choosing statistical reports from all over the place. Right off the bat, It would seem to be a bit of proof-texting...

We've got to figure out who they are including in that number of 54 million immigrants. Are the 14 million undocumented included? Because that would be a MAJOR change in the statistics. Plus also, comparing a group that is 50% poor, and at least 30% limited English speakers with the native population is comparing apples to oranges.

Essentially I would like to see this study peer-reviewed. Because as it stands, I don't believe it.

PLEASE NOTE that the so-called "Center for Immigration Studies" is an organization that is advocating for less immigration.

I find it especially perverse of them to blame the poor (immigrant or not) for not taking jobs that offer Health Insurance. (And making Health Insurance more expensive for the rest of us...)

Yes that is perfectly reasonable.

For the most part, a three-day walk in the Sonoran desert is a pretty good indication of physical fitness...

With very few exceptions, the 14 million undocumented immigrants are NOT a burden to the state. If you don't work, you don't eat.

That clause is the bane of families trying to bring up the grandmother, who cannot expect to walk three days in the desert.

Why walk the desert? If you are coming here legally...

RE: LMPS: Let my People Stay
Actually, you are right. This is for LEGAL immigrants.

The law makes sense. EXCEPT for cases of "family reunification."

Example: All siblings now live in the USA, they want to bring the last person from their family still left back in their country of origin: the grandmother.

In the Latin culture there will always be room for our grandmother in our homes. In fact, the mere thought of shipping the grandmother to a government funded nursing home is anathema. (I remember watching in Costa Rica a documentary about strange and exotic beliefs from around the world: cannibalism in Indonesia, initiation ceremonies in Africa and for North America the shocking news that North Americans sent their elders to die in these "big" buildings -by Latin American standards.) (Images from Soylent Green liberally mixed in... ...turns out they were referring to nursing homes...)

Bottom line: For the most part, immigrants take care of their own.

I'm nostalgic for the day when we Americans kept our elderly in our homes. My mom insisted on moving to a non-assist facility. Then she'll go to an assisted-living facility. From there, who knows. I think it says something terrible about our culture (or lack of it).

I don't think the practices of immigrants will change that for us.

It is just a cultural difference. We are not the ones "warehousing" our loved ones. Our elderly are, for the most part the ones that prefer the freedom of having their own place.

Cultural differences: Most Latinos think American churches are too cold.

Most Americans really feel uncomfortable in Latino churches, having to run the gauntlet of hugs and kisses from EVERYONE. In Catholic churches the "Give the Peace of the Lord to your neighbor" takes half an hour...

My Amish relatives take care of their own in the same fashion. It's a set of values from a very different place and time.

On the upside, people are now leading active and healthy lives for a lot longer.

Agree, Myotch!

My generation missed it but one generation back--grandma and grandpa moved in with their kids at some point. I think an awful lot was learned and shared with three generations under one roof.

RE: LMPS: Let my People Stay
We had three generations in our home. My parents, me and husband...our three kids AND my brother (yes we were like the Waltons). My daughter said she had a good childhood with her grandparents in the home and gave every indication that is how she wants her future children to grow up ...so I guess we're going to move in with her someday.
