I sat through many a fundy sermon where I heard that the more money you give, the more God will bless you. And in the same sermon hear the preacher bash the "name-it-and-claim-it" crowd.
They just use different catch phrases and verses but the concept is the same.
"Give ME your money and God will bless you. In fact the more you give, the more you will be blessed. You do want more blessings from God, don't you?"

I always heard our preachers say that you have to give 10% and then above and beyond that.

Oh, I heard that if you weren't tithing, you were robbing God. And we heard a lovely sermon illustration where a man who was convicted of the need to tithe years after he was saved so he went back and added up the tithes that he 'owed' God so that he could pay him back.

Honestly, if we owe God, then we've never accepted a free gift, have we?

People who don't pay their tithe end up in the hospital getting their tithe extracted.
