old enough to die, too young to vote?
Or so says Jonah Goldberg of the National Review. Thoughts?

RE: old enough to die, too young to vote?
I would say that today's youth have the potential to be even more informed about local, national, and global politics than almost any generation before them. We need the idealism of youth to balance the cynicism of age. Besides, calling today's youth 'stupid' and 'ignorant' just means you're stuck in your own teenage years. I wonder how many of his sentences star with "Back in my day...".

That's really an excellent point.

I was remarkably ignorant at 18, but not because I wanted to be. I was raised in such a sheltered environment, I rarely had an opportunity to learn and grow on my own.

True. But in my experience very, very few take advantage of it.

Maybe I'll try stopping some of the recruits who walk the halls around me every day and ask them about some political issues and their views on them.

I certainly hope they have thought a lot about current issues! Huge sample bias, though. Wink

I don't think today's youth are really all that different than Goldberg's generation were when they were youth. Or the generation before that. Probably they're a great deal different from pre-tv and widespread newspaper distribution generations, but that's irrelevant to this, really. I think he's just irritated that many of today's youth don't agree with him and his positions, and are therefore "stupid."

How is an older person who was raised in a sheltered environment like the IFB and never left any different?

Are you going to have a broad selection of issues about which to ask?

I can guarantee that if you ask me about certain political issues, I'll be as ignorant about them as I was 20 years ago simply because I'm not terribly interested in them or think they just aren't all that important. Others, I'm passionate about. I suspect young people aren't all that different. (I suspect most people aren't all that different.) If you ask only about your own interests, you may get very different answers than if you ask about a broad spectrum of issues.

I would say both social and economic issues should come into play. Anyone else have suggestions?
