Here is another newly finished book by my mother:
The Truth About Tithing ![]() I think many of you from an IFB background (and others as well) will find this book really helpful in understanding the TRUTH behind this "doctrine of tithing" that was beaten into our heads while in the church. Many other denoms out there teach this doctrine as well so this book (supposed to be a really short easy read) will help you to understand what Fundys won't be teaching you anytime soon. ![]() If you read it please let me know what you thought about it. RE: The Truth About Tithing
Awesome! Our pastor taught on tithing last year. It was all stuff I'd never heard before. Actually reading the passages in context makes a huge difference.

RE: The Truth About Tithing
Yeah, it took him several weeks to go through everything but he covered it in detail. I took away a few interesting notes:
1. Tithe was not on the best but every 10th animal that passed the counter. So if you were tithing on your flock and had 99 sheep you tithed the 10th, 20th...90th one. 2. Abraham tithed to Melchizidech but he tithed on the possessions of others. He returned the goods to the orginal owners less tithe and I think some vittles for his strike force. 3. Money was never tithed, only used as a matter of travel convenience. Sell the animals to be tithed, travel, buy replacements. boymom: What in the thelogical region of eternal punishment is a daddy-daughter ball? amyrose5:No one is in charge around here. One example was that the Jews actually got to enjoy their "tithes" in the Temple with the Levites on occasion! Imagine a Fundy MOG ever letting THAT happen in his kingdom?

RE: The Truth About Tithing
And if I remember the tithe was only given by landowners in Isreal. And it was never money, only the harvest and animals, and it was given to the Levite priests who forfieted their land ownership rights.
Yeah, tell your local IFB preacher to sell his house and give him a bushel of wheat and a goat for the tithe. Flying a plane is no different than riding a bicycle, just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes. |

RE: The Truth About Tithing
"Then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the Lord your God will choose. Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice."......Deuteronomy 14:25-26
The good news is that Christ died for all of you........not just some of you! |

RE: The Truth About Tithing
it was never just 10%, sometimes 1/5, sometimes 20%. i dont think it was ever fiscal. not to mention the fact that the tithe is the only thing that the "church" is required to do to recieve God's blessings, now aint that funny.
I am who I am. The rest is your problem. |

RE: The Truth About Tithing
I think this is a fascinating topic on a number of levels, and I'm glad to see your mother doing her part in putting this out there. Tithing is insidious on many levels, especially for the poor of Christianity who spend their entire lives barely eking out a living so that the local MOG doesn't have to earn a living with his own two hands. It turns so many teachings of the NT upside down (Acts 20:33-35 addressed to elders, I Thessalonians 3, many others) that it's a wonder it is taught and tolerated by so many. In smaller churches, 50, 60, 70 percent or more of the "tithe" goes directly to the "pastor" of the cult, er, church.

Uh, 1/5 and 20% are the same. This has been your daily math lesson. Stay tuned tomorrow when we learn long division
