RE: Teaching your kids about sex

Most people probably don't have a whole lot of hymen, left, sure. But I'm going to self-censor most of what I was going to say here. I forget how obsessed certain parts of the homeschooling community can be with this stuff.

RE: Teaching your kids about sex
Yeah, but where it got me, is some of the people saying this stuff were guys.
It is really not that these people can't have an opinion about it. It is just, I want my kids, if they come across info presented the way it has been presented in a discussion like that, to be able to tell the truth from speculation. For sure! And knowing everything about what someone else's experience was still doesn't tell you about your own.

RE: Teaching your kids about sex
Sorry to bump a thread, but I thought this movie I just got finished watching was apropos:
http://letstalkaboutsexthefilm.com/ It's not a perfect film and this link gives some points as to why. The film does not bash Christianity or Christian ideals, tho it does point out the serious flaws in the abstinence and purity movements. Namely, they don't work. You'll probably like Pastor Greg Flint. He seemed to have the best solution for his faith community as compared to the other pastors who took the usual "scare the crap out of them" approach. "ABRAHAM DIED FOR YOUR LOX AND MATZO BALLS!" |

I just watched this tonight and found it interesting and helpful. Responding to the OP, one thing I'm definitely going to teach my kids is that your virginity doesn't decide whether you're pure or impure, or a good or bad person. Your heart does. |

As a believer, how have you or will you talk with your kids about sex? I didn't grow up Fundy. My mom wanted to make sure I wasn't as clueless as she was about sex growing up. Her mom didn't tell her a darn thing about it. Zero, zip, nada. So when I was 8, I asked her what sex was so she got out a chalkboard and drew parts and explained the mechanics and that's about all I learned. She also got pregnant with me before she was married and she wished she had had more respect for her body than she did. She married my dad and it didn't work out. I liked that fact that she taught me to respect myself. It helped a lot that she shared her story with me. She was honest and I thank her for it. My fundy SIL lied to her kids about being pregnant before she was married. When my unsaved BIL took her license out of her purse, that's when her kids found out. I wanted to save myself for marriage and when I believed on the LORD, I set some simple boundaries for myself to keep ME accountable. I was a virgin when I married. My kids are homeschooled and are ages 15, 12, 10. My 15 year old knows some of the basics. I don't know if I'm going to buy a "health class" book or what. And I'm the same way, I want my kids to know that God did intend for sex to be b/t a man and wife. I don't want them to get the idea that well "everybody's doing it" and so can you. I will teach them about STD's and the possible consequences of having sex outside of marriage. Yes, God did make sex for pro-creation, but that wasn't the only reason. You get to have fun and feel good too! I don't see any rules for the marriage bed in the Bible!! |
