Unfortunately for shocked moms and dads dropping off their sharply-dressed teens at Miami Beach Senior High's big dance, the only separation was a wall: not only was the Miami Beach Convention Center the site of the school's prom Saturday night, but the very adult, very explicit 3-day Exxxotica Expo was underway in the same building.

"Oh no, I don’t like that,” mom Loise Carter told CBS Miami after dropping off her daughter. “That is terrible. I don’t like it.”

School officials said extra staff and even police officers were on hand at the convention center to ensure that students and porn stars didn't meet, and entrances to the separate exhibition halls were accessed on opposite sides of the building.

But the move still raised eyebrows. Porn star Joanna Angel told WSVN that the school had plenty of notice the self-proclaimed "largest event in the USA dedicated to love and sex" would be going down the same weekend.

"The date of this [expo] is announced and it was online -- I think it's been almost a year. It's been around for a while," Angel said. "We're just here to do a job and hang out with our fans. We have no idea what's going on across the street."

School officials, who insisted prom wasn't impacted by any x-rated shenanigans, argued their options for prom were limited by safety concerns.

“We do not hold our proms in venues such as hotels for the safety of our children and to discourage drinking,” said MBSH's activities director, Gwen Zaldivar. “Therefore this was the only available location and its easy to control the students are safe.”

Prom-goers -- perhaps used to seeing all sorts of stages of undress on Miami Beach -- seemed to take the unusual pairing in stride.

"It's Miami," said one nonplussed student, as his date giggled. "Things happen everywhere, you know?"

For those not in the know, I graduated from this HS in '99. All of the proms were held in hotels. Not a single student ever rented a hotel room where the prom was being held from what I recall. Why would you do that when there were plenty of sleazy hotels in the area who didn't care about credit cards and the number of people in the room as long as it was paid for? Not to mention the fact that your school is on South Beach and is more interesting and enticing than some stupid hotel room.

I've also been to Exxotica the first time it was held. At the same convention center. Where it's been held at the same time and exact same place for the past, oh, 5 years now. I very much doubt the school had no idea what was going on.

That being said, if that was my prom, I would have ditched and gone to the expo! My senior year, prom was held in a tiny hotel ballroom because we got bumped from our traditional venue at a larger hotel.

...and before people chime in about gyms and stuff. HAHAHA!! Proms and Homecoming dances in Miami-Dade Public Schools are open to all grades. There is no way they would fit the number of students into a gym. Add onto that the fact that the wood floors in gyms are specially treated and would be destroyed by having people walk on them in heels and hard-soled shoes. Then there is all the catering, staff, etc and it's not economic to have a prom in the gym of a large school.
