Last spanking

We will occasionally swat our kids - never with an implement, always over clothing - but rarely once they're past about three. My oldest we haven't spanked at all since he was five, and my current four-year-old ... I can't even remember the last time he got a swat. Spanking a teenager is creepy and wrong ... your parents were way out of line.

I wasn't raised in a Christian home but I did receive spankings up until around age 8. Well, my mom believed in God, but it wasn't an IFB home.


I used to wish I had grown up in a Christian home, but reading this blog the past month, I've changed my mind about that. I didn't realize that the Ron William's (the abuser/owner of Hephzibah House) way to raise and/or beat babies until they are adults was so pervasive in the IFB. I though that was isolated.


I'm so sorry you ladies went through that. When will these parents realize you can't beat the sin out and God into a child/adult??!!

I had a Mommy Dearest moment when I was 15. I grabbed the belt out of her hands and told her she was never going to spank me again.

She didn't. She slapped me around a little sometimes. I could handle that. She caught me by surprise at the top of the stairs once, and I fell to the bottom. I just laid still until she said " well, I killed him." Then I got up and walked out the door.

She didn't spank lovingly. She spanked like I was Kunta Kinte.

Christian School - now that's the spanking experience. Tell ya what ya did wrong. Pray. Counsel. Assume the position. Whack! Whack! Whack! The paddle hurt, but the indignity hurt way more. Lesson learned? Probably more than the home discipline. By Senior year, my at-school behavior was vastly improved, so it only took 6 years of Christian education. Still, they didn't understand they were just part of the cycle of violence in my life. If they knew, would they have still done the deed?

Sometimes I wish I had fought back just a little. Giving an adult a scratched face or a bloody lip just might have given me a ticket to some real counseling.

My mom has really mellowed over the years, and is a gracious, thoughtful and generous grandmother to my kid.

*sigh. My dad was the principal of my Christian school from the time I was in kindergarten until 8th grade. I never got spanked at school--I was a pretty compliant kid and scared out of my mind to do anything that was spanking worthy. But...his paddle had a name and I'm sure it was used plenty. (This would have been throughout the 80's when corporal punishment was still a fairly accepted practice, though probably not in public schools as much.)

I don't remember getting spanked too often as a kid for reasons I already mentioned. The one thing I remember and swear I will never do is tell my kid "this hurts me more than it hurts you". Uh..no...no..it doesn't. I've been a parent who has spanked a kid and it didn't hurt me in the least. Frustrated me, made me sad, yes. Hurt...hell no.

The last one I remember, I was 18, but I may have been spanked at 19 too. I remember my mom spanked my sister after she'd had already had her own child but came back to live with us. My sister must have been 20 at the time. It was just my mom's way of telling my sister that she was the boss. Very humiliating and disgusting IMO.

I feel scarred just reading all your stories. My parents spanked us, but that was pretty much done by age 5... maybe a little older for me, and the maximum age decreased with each child.

My mom did lose it with me one time and try to spank me when I was about 12-13. IIRC I was being a jackass. But I just laughed at her when she attempted the spanking.

high school probably. i don't remember exactly, and i don't care to. it was a way to justify abuse.

i remember being 23 and talking with my SIL, realizing in surprise that the MOST she would ever spank her kids was 5 "whacks" (as we called them when i was growing up). when i was a kid, 5 was the bare minimum. 10 was probably normal, 25 happened quite a few times, and 50 wasn't unheard of.

The last spanking I got was when I was 9. I was in counseling at school, and I told the school counselor something my parents told me not to tell her. I know it had something to do with something I told the school counselor, but I don't remember exactly what I said.

My parents used to coach me on what I couldn't tell teachers/ counselors/ DCF.

If I go to a house when I'm working because a parent uses physical discipline on their kid on or after their 18th birthday, I will (and am required by law) to arrest the living piss out of them. 17 and below, reasonable physical punishment is permissible where I live. (I will mock someone til the day they die for spanking a high school student.). At 18, it becomes battery- domestic violence.
