What you (and the Brits and the Kiwis) call tomato sauce, we call ketchup (or, in some spots, catsup). It's a thick tomato preparation with vinegar and spices in it. Not for use on pasta but as a condiment for burgers, hot dogs, etc. Major maker of it over here is Heinz. What we call tomato sauce comes in cans and is used for cooking as it has no real spices in it at all. It's basically cooked down tomatoes that have been either puréed or strained of seeds. My husband uses it with chili seasoning to make chile con carne. Neither of these are to be confused with pasta sauce, which has Italian seasonings (basil, oregano, garlic, etc.) and is served over pasta. A steady diet of Hellfire and brimstone will only give you Spiritual gas and indigestion... from Mark Moore as posted on Facebook |
