RE: Lawns
We rent. I don't give a dang about the lawn except for anything that will cost me my security deposit.

Keeps the bug population managable.
Raises the money value of the neighborhood.

What I find funny is that some fertilize their lawn to the max and then complain about how much time they spend cutting the grass.

God has been faithful and loving me for over 18000 days. I think that He will be faithful and loving to me today.

RE: Lawns
We rent, too. Not having to mow was one of the perks of renting. Then the landlord said he was going to raise our rent, or we could mow, and the rent would stay the same. My 12 yos wanted to start mowing lawns to earn some money, but he needed a little practice first. So I bought a mower, and taught him to mow. With the economy down, nobody wants to pay a kid to mow their lawn these days, so he only mows our lawn, and I pay him instead of the landlord. Now the landlord has started fertilizing the lawn.

We rent, too. We get to use the extra garage in back in return for my husband doing the lawn work. And I think he actually likes it.

I like mowing because Bermuda grass stalks are ugly. And there are so many of them. haha

RE: Lawns
I've just killed my entire front lawn that used to be a beautiful carpet of fescue. It's about to be centipede grass. I'm going to love cutting once a month!

Edit: I should add that it's no longer beautiful fescue because it takes so much work. Centipede is called the "lazy man's lawn." Smile

My standards are no bare spots and it's neatly mowed/edged, it's all good. Hubby would mow only when absolutely necessary, so we use a mowing guy.

Could someone please explain to me why having a perfectly manicured yard is worth the time, trouble and expense? I get that some people like to be outside working. Flower and vegetable gardens I understand for the asthetic and food value.

Some of the same neighbors that are only organic "Whole Foods" kinds of people happily have lawn companies spray their yards for weeds, etc. I just don't get it, help me understand.

I live in the same kind of neighborhood. It is not worth the time or expense. I keep mine cut and try to kill the dandelions. That is all.

Our front is centipede. A few summers back, I only had to mow it 3 times the entire summer. Smile

RE: Lawns
It is a status thing. I live on a nice street, one that most people don't know exists but the ones who do know are impressed. There are always landscaping guys here. There are also people who work on their lawns every day.

I cut my grass when I need to. I've got to say it's gratifying to have a well-cut lawn. I have thought about putting down some grass seed in places. But for the most part, lawn work is a pain. If I didn't live in this neighborhood I'd probably cut the grass even less but there's an element of keeping up appearances.

My neighbor is one of those who does nothing but landscape and keep up his lawn. Rolleyes

I look at the opportunity as a workout session and get my ass out there and get it all done at once then relax the rest of the day if possible. Smile
