Gawd or Gahd

Gawd or Gahd
When I was a kid my mom got on my case because I was pronouncing God, "Gahd" instead of "Gawd." To her "Gawd" is reverent, but "Gahd" (Boston style accent) sounds like cursing, "Oh my Gahd."

RE: Gawd or Gahd
... It's a vowel pronunciation difference. Plenty of people don't even have the "aw" vowel. Ridiculous! Sorry about your mom!

RE: Gawd or Gahd
In my church in Indiana, we generally pronounced "God" with the same vowel sound as "dog", somewhere in between "Gahd" and "Gawd". Maybe that's why "dawg" always sounded silly and affected to me. The more extreme Boston style "Gahd" (Valley Girl OMG comes close) would have sounded to us like smacking gum in church. Some people, especially the older generation, leaned more toward "Gawd" when they wanted to sound pious.

(Funny how "pious" was always an insult in the IFB. Almost as bad as "religious".

RE: Gawd or Gahd
I think I can see where your mom was coming from. If "Gahd" isn't the normal way you pronounce the short "o", then someone WOULD sound to me like they were mocking His Name if they were to say it that way.

Of course, if that's the person's accent, I wouldn't think a thing about it.

"Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan.

I'm with the 'the same /o/ sound as in dog' crowd.

Initially, I thought this thread was going to be about how we spelled "God" in chatting so we wouldn't feel like we were taking God's name in vain, lol. (personally, I'll use the "Gawd" spelling) Oh. My. Gawd.

Regardless of the pronunciation, to be truly righteous and holy, you have to pronounce it with 2 syllables. Prasie Gaw-ed!

I have not paid close attention to how we pronounce it where I live.
