Know Before You Owe- A problem for Fundy U?
Wasn't sure the best place to put this, so I put it here.

The President today signed an executive order requiring colleges that accept GI Bill funds to outline their educational standards and the real costs of attending school there before military students enroll. I know that many Fundy U's don't accept GI Bill money (although more and more are), and most people who would go to Fundy U would go there regardless of the cost or educational quality.

But this policy could (hopefully) force Fundy U's to be more transparent with all prospective students (and their parents, when applicable) about the quality of education they receive there and whether or not it is worth the money or the time.

This story emphasizes the financial aspects of attending college, but President Obama mentioned in his speech today that unaccredited colleges are fooling students into thinking they are getting a quality education when they are really not. I think he was primarily focusing on small-time business or technical colleges, but Fundy U is clearly in the crosshairs here, even if the policy makers are not intentionally aiming at them.

Anyone out there know more about the "Know Before You Owe" requirements or the details of the program?

I walk with bare, hushed feet the ground Ye tread with boldness shod;
I dare not fix with mete and bound The love and power of God. - J.G. Whittier

All I remember from every recruiting tape or live stage performance* was that they were "God fearing" colleges with "strict moral codes"; nary a word about accreditation. None of it impressed me, I was tired of living in Fundyland, so I went to the local community college instead.

A problem I see with the way schools are allowed to market loans, many of them Federally-subsidized, to 18 year old students is that a fool and his money are often parted before they get together in the first place.

The funny thing is that people from Pensacola will literally tell you that accreditation is NOT IMPORTANT. That's right. They literally lie. And I say lie because they try to get off the topic very quickly. That was my experience anyway. One of the teachers from my fundy high school this year told me that too. Thankfully my parents decided it would be a waste of money. The schools should be made to tell the truth about this stuff, because it's just dishonest and frankly, un-Christian. Plus, I think this year they're advertised price was something like 7500-8500; but everyone we asked that actually goes there said it ends up being 10000-11000.

I like the "Know Before You Owe" addition, but I would also like to see them add a requirement for regional accreditation for the school to be able to accept GI Bill funds. In my opinion, for the taxpayers to fund anything less is a wast of money.
