RE: Versions of the Bible
Those are some good examples. I like "superfluity of naughtiness"!!!

I always thought that Phil. 2:14 in the KJV sounded kind of silly: "Do all things without murmuring and disputing." With my own children, I use the NIV: "Do everything without complaining or arguing." It's a lot more direct.

There are also many examples in Proverbs of verses that lose their punch when read in the KJV. One my husband likes to use as such an example is Prov. 18:1: "Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom." Wha???? In the NIV - "An unfriendly man pursues selfish ends; he defies all sound judgment." and ESV: "Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment." (My husband likes to use this verse as a warning against ultra-separatist fundies; the way they isolate themselves from other believers is NOT wise!

"Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan.

RE: Versions of the Bible
Laura - I know I have been a very bad boy as of late, but I must give you my all-time favorite, 2 Corinthians 6:11-13

"O ye Corinthians, our mouth is open unto you, our heart is enlarged. Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own bowels. Now for a recompence in the same, (I speak as unto my children,) be ye also enlarged."

Acts 5:30 is also kinda strange "The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.".............it appears they killed Jesus first, THEN hung him on a tree.

The good news is that Christ died for all of you........not just some of you!

RE: Versions of the Bible
Psalm 119:165 KJV
Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.

ESV:
Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble.

When being manipulated by a KJVO pastor and told that if you are offended by something he says, it is because you do not love God's law - Well, there is a huge difference between the meaning of these versions.

RE: Versions of the Bible
Let's not forget 1 Thessalonians 5:22
King James Version (KJV)
22Abstain from all appearance of evil.

1 Thessalonians 5:22
New International Version (NIV)
22 reject every kind of evil.

1 Thessalonians 5:22
English Standard Version (ESV)
22 Abstain from every form of evil.

Even the NKJV says
1 Thessalonians 5:22
New King James Version (NKJV)
22 Abstain from every form of evil.

RE: Versions of the Bible
Thanks again, everyone. It went really well last night. The kids had that "Huh?" look every time a verse was read out of the KJV. It's all God's Word, some versions help you understand it and Him better. I used the analogy of Grandmas to lead into the topic. Many Grandmas have a special name (Nana, Nonni, Mamar, Gram, Grammy), but it doesn't change the relationship.

This week's topic: babies. All questions about where babies come from are immediately referred to parents. If they press me, it's the stork and cabbage patch!

RE: Versions of the Bible
My daughter's daycare centre said her group (she's 2) are starting to get really interested in babies. They collected a baby picture of each of the kids, and they're going to put them together into a display Smile

RE: Versions of the Bible
I remember how my old Fundy pastor would say that the KJB was written on a 7th. grade reading level and to prove it he would get some child to read John 11:35 "Jesus wept".
Pastor.. "Do you know what that means?"
Child..."Jesus cried."
Pastor... "See, even a child understands the Bible."

That is so ridiculous. Preaching to the choir. "Haymen, preacher." Confused

"Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan.
