Funny thing is on the other board when I said that mail order brides were only a shade different than American women in loveless marriages of necessity or convenience, I was condemned for comparing marriage to prostitution.

It's a subject I know better than to bring up but I do it anyway because I'm like that. I guess it's just been on my mind since I moved back to this busted little city. I see how hard single mothers in a largely blue collar economy struggle to survive and the price they pay financially and emotionally for a decision to have sex with a guy. I've come to see how the idea that marriage is about romantic love is wrong-headed and has tremendous social costs. Marriage has always, since ancient times, been about making sure women were taken care of. If it turns out a marriage is something higher and nobler, then that's great and of course I would encourage my female friends not to "settle" but I was speaking about the custom as a whole.
