Back in 1989 Mark Chappell was removed from this position after being caught on multiple occassions having sexual relations with an underaged girl; who was a church member, student at the "christian" school and his baby sitter. After initially covering this up the pastor finally anounced what had been going. He really had no choice since Mark had been caught on more than one occassion and by different people! Mark was brought in front of the church and admitted to what he had done and that it took place over an extended period of time and muliple times. True to "fundy" way the pastor stated that this should be delt with from within church otherwise we would be "letting the devil win!" because it would hurt the church etc. The pastor went through a list of things Mark would have to do including councelling and reading his bible, and Mark was no longer allowed to be around children or alone with any females. He went on to say that Mark may sometime in the future be able to serve in the choir but that he would never be allowed back to his old position. To make a long story short Mark skipped town some time later never answering for what he'd done, not to the church or the authorities. Well he moved on to 1st baptist Long Beach and became pastor there and was booted for... Adultery! Oh yeah Mark was married while our youth pastor in Ct and had at least one small child and his wife was pregnant with2nd or 3rd when story broke of him molesting student/babysitter. Wife stuck with him but finally had enough sometime after his affairs in Long Beach came to light. Well true to form he ran again left the first wife and children behind and moved on to Freeway Baptist in Phoenix AZ where his uncle was retiring as pastor and handed the church over to Mark !! Oh yeah back to 1st Baptist Long Beach Marks father Larry Chappell was a pastor there before Mark but he too was booted for multiple affairs!! You can't make this stuff up! Well Mark has lied and covered up the truth long enough! This story is all true and is easily verified. Mark Chappell has no buisness behind the pulpit in Freeway or any other church! So if you know him or of him tell him it's time to step down and if he has any sense of repentance in his heart he should come back to Ct and turn himself in! He has recently lashed out at a member who questioned him on this stating that "the Devil was useing them" and that he was "under grace" so it was finished!! I pose this senario to Mark Chappell or any supporter of him: If Mark Chappell's new "wife" was raped would it be "ok" as long as he said he was "under grace"? would Mark support him, the rapist, as a pastor? I mean he is "under grace" after all; what if Mark was raped? would he turn the other cheek? What about kidnapping? what if you bring the kidnapped kids to AWANA? or become bus captain and only kidnap a few of them?I mean as long as you bring the rest to sunday school, whats one or two lives as long as bring the rest to church, Right Mark?! Of course this is only if you profess "I'm under grace"!
Sorry I'm Rambling on but I only recently found out where Mark went after he ran away from CT! I m still in shock that he was ever allowed to become a pastor never mind twice ! Please help get the word out about this man ask your pastors to call for him to step down!! Any other Ideas on what can be done? I am sure his congragation is not aware of his molesting students here in CT please help get the word out!!

RE: should Mark Chappell an Admitted Molester still be a Pastor
I was that underaged girl. I am standing here crying because after 25 years someone is finally taking my side. The seduction started when I was 15. He didn't put his hands on me until I turned 16. He continued to molest me for almost two years. I didn't know how to tell anyone and finally, in desperation, took a bottle of pills. Even in the hospital I was afraid to tell anyone what happened. He told me if I told anyone I would be responsible for ruining his life and the church. I wouldn't talk to the shrink at the hospital, but I said I would talk to my Pastor. I told Pastor Baker ( who was later fired for having an affair with his secretary that was going on during the same time as Mark was molesting me) what was going on. I don't know what he told the doctors but I was let out. My parents weren't told, the church was not told and Mark was not fired from being my youth pastor. Mark and I were to undergo counceling (separatly of course) and no one would ever know. I was put back into the youth group for pete's sake! Of course, several months later, he molested me again. I kept it secret. Then I turned 18 and was off to HAC. I wanted so much to be right with God. I knew that if I didn't tell someone what had happened that I wouldn't have the strength to say no to Mark when I went home to Ct. for Christmas break. So I went for counceling.......with Jack Schaap. -no joke. Of course, he was all about protecting Bro. Hyles and the college. He had to bring my situation to Jack Hyles and the big question was not what would happen to Mark, but whether or not I would be allowed back in college. I was told that I had to tell my Pastor at home. That entire vacation I avoided Mark. At church every time I would look up he would be staring at me( from the platform, across the church, through the window in the door) with those eyes . On the last day of vacation I told Pastor Baker. He sent me back to HAC - where I was not allowed to register for classes until the ruling came down from Jack Hyles- while he decided what to do. He decided to bring it before the church. I wasn't there so I cannot tell you what was said. All I know for sure is that I was told repeatedly that I was an equal partner in this sin, that I was just as guilty as Mark was. I don't know if the congregation was told that it had started when I was 16 or if they thought I was already eighteen. I was always made to believe and feel, from the Pastor on down to the congregation, that I was as much to blame as Mark was. I came home from school that summer, stayed for about three months then left and didn't look back. I didn't even talk about it for about ten years. Then we moved back to Ct. A new Pastor took over the church and my husband surrendered to the ministry. Everything that I had buried came to the surface. How could I , who felt so dirty and unworthy, ever be a pastor's wife. I went to the new pastor for counceling. I believe this man to be a good man. He tried to look into everything for me, but there were no notes from decean's meetings and church meetings from that far back. He and his wife let me know that I indeed was the victim and not an equal perpetrator, but once again I was encouraged not to bring up the past with anyone. What good would it do? I was asked. I was encouraged to forgive and move on. I believe to the best of my ability at that time that I did. Now after all this time, I am reading this and wondering if I should go to the police. I know there are people who would tell me that if I go to the police it just means that I am bitter and I haven't forgiven him. I don't know what the right thing is to do.

RE: should Mark Chappell an Admitted Molester still be a Pastor
Also, After Pastor Baker brought the situation to the church, while I was still at college, another girl in the youth group called me and told me that Mark was molesting her as well. I called Pastor Baker and told him. Then another girl came forward. I do not believe that the church was ever told about the other two girls.

Leeleeme - thank you so much for telling your story. I am so sorry for what you have gone through. If you can, I would encourage you to go to police so that any further victims will be protected.

RE: should Mark Chappell an Admitted Molester still be a Pastor
Leeleeme - You are SO brave. Thank you for sharing with us. You need to know you're safe here.

I don't know any of the Chappells, including Mark. But I think they're slimeballs, every single one of them. Paul Chappell may think he's righteous, but for someone who has the gall to call out Jack Schaap but not his own brother? He's one of them.

I definitely think you need to investigate going to the police. Do NOT worry what other people will think of you. That man has not changed. He has not repented, he has not publicly confessed his sin, he has not made restitution. He has RUN away from his sins, and hasn't looked back.

God knows how many girls he has abused, and you may speak up just in time to rescue more.

Huge hugs, and welcome to SFL.
