When I first heard of this sort of thing happening, it was shocking -- like discovering your world was just a manufactured Matrix. Even worse to me than finding out that pastors/leaders could be sexual predators was discovering that entire churches full of "good people" would turn their backs on the victim, cover up sin, and defend someone whose actions were indefensible both legally and Scripturally. I saw Christians who were so strict they wouldn't even have a TV in their home (so you'd expect them to eschew evil when it appeared before them in the flesh) praise a perverted pastor and denigrate anyone who spoke up against him. It showed me a moral degeneracy I never, ever expected that underlay some of the most holy-looking people.

The one Deacon is my husband and he is bashing him and called a meeting with all the men and deacond (of course not my husband) He is running scared and trying to manage everyone there under his thumb. Write Icobod on the Door of Freeway Baptist Chruch in Phoenix, AZ I will never be back I can't stand to look at the child molester, adultry ridden pastor!!! And no one there cares!!

I am sorry to hear Mark Chappell is putting your family through this just to save his sorry behind. How sad people who call themselves "Christian" toss aside their Bibles so they can continue to worship their mannogawd. Sick and sad.

I hope it does too. We have called 3 pastors his exwife and they all confirm it is true but nobody here will even listen to it. We are of the Devil and he is using us......he's changed and blah blah blah.......now we are getting threats, calls, people cussing us out. My husband is a 100% disable veteran. Boy his exfriend and wife said he would be mean and it would be bad, but really........are people that stupid look up the facts make some phone calls decide for your self....trust him not an option!!!!

That sounds so stressful. You guys are going through a lot right now. So hard losing all your (so-called) friends...

Perhaps potential visitors will google the church before attending, and will decide to find a sane church instead. Also, I bet you will start hearing from other Freeway Baptist Church members when they inevitably get hurt by Mark Chappell and/or his cronies. The calls will slowly trickle in...cause they will know they can trust you and that you will understand and can validate their experiences.

On a positive note: You were involved in a very unhealthy church and now you can find a better one. This is a serious church upgrade opportunity. I hope your husband eventually is in church leadership again because we need more like him.

I'm kinda blown away reading this post. I did a search tonight on google "dr. larry chappell obituary molester" and it brought me here. I was hoping to see that chappell had died. I was a young girl in california (now much much older) when I encountered and had to live the terror of being molested by him. He was at a church in San Jose. I met him at a retreat, he was the preacher and bible study leader. He got me alone, told me he was going to lead me to god, then stuck his fingers hard inside of me. I'm really sorry to shock any of you that don't like to hear such things, maybe this will even be deleted. He took my little new testament bible made out of black leather and opened it and circled a verse in phillipians, something like " I thank my god upon every remembrance of thee". It was all so sick, I was scared and couldn't tell anyone. I kept wanting to fix it, I kept thinking he would say he was sorry and really and truly lead me to god. I almost had an emotional breakdown, I kept it all a secret, I started to think I was really bad and that I was dirty. This story is way too long to tell it all here, but years later I found out where he was, and wrote him a letter. He denied ever knowing me and he threatened me by saying he would fly out to where I was. It was scary. He has been in my consciousness, and I would be relieved if he was gone from this planet forever. Perhaps he really is dead, I don't know. If anyone knows for sure, please say so here. He called me to his office several times and abused me, right in the church. I was so naive and thought he was going to apologize. He hurt me physically and mentally and spiritually. He altered my whole life. Yes, I told a therapist years later, but he was an atheist and didn't understand the impact spiritually. His sons are the same way?? How frightening, is it hereditary or something? When I see a cross now, I think of chappell.

Hello all sorry I've been MIA virus ate my laptop just picked up a new one I will post later today I can't believe what Mark is doing to you and your husband Believer, I guess we shouldn't be surprised! But the more the word gets out the better the chance of resent victims coming forward! I have not given up on the victims here in Ct either please pray for them that God will show how important the truth is! Gotta get back to work will post later what Wallingford police say etc. Message to Mark Chappell: Be sure your sins Will find you out!!

I am so sorry for all the years and years of anxiety and pain this man has caused you. I was sexually abused by a man who was kind of a family friend when I was 11 years old and lived for years in abject fear of him. He approached me many times after that and I effectively avoided being alone with him. He threatened me over and over, but I finally confronted him in front of other people when I was an adult. His threats were empty. He was such a big pussy, he wouldn't even answer me. The fear lessened. I am not saying that you should do this, but I am encouraging you that if you were to ever go to the police, there is nothing to fear. I will pray that God will heal you completely.
