Recreation Games
I'm in charge of 9 kids for 2 hours for the next 2 1/2 months and need recreation/games to do with them. The best I have is red light/green light and freeze tag. The kids range from 4 1/2 to 3rd grade. Any suggestions? We have a basketball sized gym where we can play.

RE: Recreation Games
Last time I subbed K-3 P.E. they played a game called "Scat Cat". A couple of kids are "It" (give them an object like a nerf ball to indicate that) and there are three or four bases scattered in the room. Kids who are "It" can make another kid "It" by touching them with the object (no throwing or you sit out). The bases are a safe space where they can't be tagged, but only one kid can occupy the base at a time. If another kid comes up and says "Scat Cat" that one gets the base. The farther apart the bases the better.
The result of this is kids running pretty much non-stop. They all seemed to have fun. |

RE: Recreation Games
Charades can be fun for a quieter game or simply having them all act out a story like "Chicken Little."
There seemed to be some fun ideas on this site: http://kidshealth.org/parent/growth/lear...games.html "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

RE: Recreation Games
If you have a place for it, paper and markers or crayons will occupy them for some less group oriented down time. That fact is my favorite part of subbing that age group. You really can make sure they have that and say "draw something" and 90% of kids will. Another 5% will merely need a suggestion about what to draw. And the last 5% were not going to do anything you asked anyway

RE: Recreation Games
I did activities with kids for 4 years. 1 hour a day, kids from kindergarten to 7th grade. Calisthenics and kickball and games that incorporate tag, like ghost tag or hop tag, or flag tag where you attach two velcro tags to their hips like flag football, then someone takes their tags one at a time, and when both are gone they are out. Wiffleball is fun and cheap too.

RE: Recreation Games
Thanks so much for all your suggestions. To celebrate Earth Day this Sunday, we are going to pull weeds in the parking lot, as well as do some games inside.
