RE: Test for Finding the Perfect Mate
A long time ago before I had children I read the account of Karen Carpenter....remember her? Some music reviewer had called her 'chubby' in a newspaper article and it deeply affected her and we all know what happened.
I read another article of a woman who suffered from eating anxieties when her father jokingly called her 'fat' face. I knew nothing about deep seated neurological problems (which I agree exist). This affected me to the point where I told me husband to PLEASE not to make any kinds of cracks about our future daughter's appearance except in positive language. I was really afraid of something bad happening. Fortunately my husband followed my advice. I have no idea if my daughter had the pre-existing conditioning or not but its better to be safe than sorry. And to be fair I did the same with our sons. They might have a lot of problems but low self esteem is not one of them. If anything their self esteem might be a bit too high or perhaps it is NORMAL because in comparison most of the rest of us have been beaten down all our lives. And as far as that list goes its impossible to live up to anyone else's standards. I made up my mind a long time ago that I was not going to change anything about myself to 'catch a guy'. I was NOT going to do any kind of make over. This is the way I am, take it or leave it. I remember clearly my mother's sad face when I told her that. In her mind I was going to be forever alone. For the record I met Mr. Right when I was 18 and married him when I was 21 to the astonishment of everyone around me (He's better looking than I am) and I stayed true to my principles...I didn't change a thing. O Beauty ever ancient, O Beauty ever new; you, the mirror of my life renewed, let me find my life in you.~St. Augustine |
