or a heave offering [wasn't there one of those?]

Shoes have come a long way from their humble beginnings as simple leather moccasins. Today footwear is built to withstand any extreme environment where a foot can tread -- from the heart of a burning building to the track of an Olympic stadium ~Scorps

That would be if you tied it to a brick and lobbed it through a window.

RE: Lolz at this
I did have one fundy preacher tell me the reason he taught tithing is that the churches he knew that did not, the pastor was not taken care of properly. A somewhat honest statement.

For most churches I would dare guess that salaries take up to 33% or more of all money given. Throw in building payments, insurance, utilities, upkeep and you are probably up to 75-80%.

You need to tithe on that

I am thinking, you are so much on kool aid it's nuts

I said chapter and verse please, all he said is that it was an increase

I said we cant apply a ceremonial law in the age of grace, I knew I was pissing them off and said I have my own views and got told, it is not up to interpretation privately. well ding ding, I read the Bible for myself not the MOG telling me to believe.

I love fundies who are heavily on kool aid, I will enjoy my Oakleys more knowing I worked for them

You should have taken them off right then and waved them toward heaven. That is a wave offering. You are thanking God for the increase without having to give the M-O-g his percentage.

Then I would ask what the figures were that the church where this so-called tithe is supposed to go, is spending each month on widows and orphans?? How much is spent each month on the poor? How much is spent each month on clothing for those in need? How much is spent on food for the hungry? The tithe doctrine just irks me. Look at the budget and then give me chapter and verse for those expenditures.
Building and grounds $$$$,
Salaries $$$$$$$$,
Utilities $$$$,
Supplies $$$$,
Love offerings to pastors-errant $$$$$$$$$.
The poor 0$
Widows 0$
The hungry 0$

RE: Lolz at this
Salaries are often 70% of the church budget.

My experience with seminary has left me very reluctant to give money that I know will go toward a church salary unless I personally know and have confidence in each person getting paid. I like to give money to charitable causes but try to spread it around and target it so I get the most bang for my buck, rather than just put a big check in a church offering plate every two weeks.

It's not that I think pastors get rich off the church's money. Some do but the vast majority do not. However, I believe that religious institutions attract people to work there because they're afraid of the real world, or in some way are using it as a crutch or as narcissistic supply. If if I gave much money toward that I would feel like an enabler. I've done too much of that in my life and it really, really bothers me.

The law was put in place to show us how inadequate we are. Maybe that's why the Man O'Gid likes it so much. If he wants to hold to the tithing thing, why not keep the dietary laws as well? or the health laws?

Because that would ruin church pot lucks.

Silly me. I forgot the 3rd ordinance (because we can't just call them Sacraments like everyone else).

RE: Lolz at this
I just read that Leviticus passage about tithing. What it actually says is that you are supposed to bring a tithe of your harvest to the temple. Then you are supposed to have a feast eating it, and give some to the Levites.

1. There are no Levites.
2. You can't eat Oakleys.
3. The Bible never says how much of the tithe goes to the Levites. In America, its too much in many cases. I know in my mega-church, they don't want you to know how much money they make.
