Counting Fillers
When one stands to talk, if one is not prepared, or is not trained then all too often the speaker will use fillers. Like, uh, ummm, and, ya know....
See if you can pick out the filler in this one: Total = ________ ( I finally just went and asked Mr Owl how many times he used it....) Bonus for the number of times "lord" is used in the prayer. Ya see. See I watched it ya see. See I stopped counting. But ya see I counted "lord" 7 times ya see.
Flying a plane is no different than riding a bicycle, just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes. |

I like this. Unique. For a while I thought we could maybe even count "nothing wrong with..." as a filler, too.

The preacher at my parents' church doesn't say "um" or "uh" much, but he does repeat himself. A lot.
One of my psychology professors at Bob Jones used the phrase "go ahead" to shore up every clause of every sentence he uttered. I'm not exaggerating when I claim he'd say things like, "What you're gonna wanna go ahead and do is just go ahead and read the reports, then go ahead and get together to decide how you're going to go ahead and finish your group projects, which you'll wanna go ahead and turn in to me by Thursday night." I counted once* and he said "go ahead" over 120 times in 50 minutes. *Yes--boring class. The human mind can understand truth only by thinking. --St. Thomas Aquinas |
