Earl Scruggs dead at age 88

Earl Scruggs, 88, passed away of natural causes in a Nashville hospital this morning. He brought the three-finger banjo picking style of the western Carolina Piedmont area to national prominence, and along with fellow musicians such as Lester Flatt (singer/guitarist), Bill Monroe (mandolin), and Ralph Stanley (banjo style) was an early pioneer of the music known as Bluegrass (so named after the Lexington, Kentucky area from which it arose).

He was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1992.

For the less literate in hillbilly culture:

He's the banjo player on this.

Has been on David Letterman many times:

Damn, the man was an incredible musician. Sad The world is a little quieter tonight.

Some people get cool hallucinations that tell them to kill people. Mine just try to get me into trouble.

My brother learned to play banjo by his method and when my son inquired about learning to play I told him to google Earl Scruggs. He was the Master.

let me find my life in you.~St. Augustine

The sad thing is when Fundy preacher talk about "African cult music" coming to us through New Orleans whorehouses, this is what they're talking about.

Most bluegrass banjo music is syncopated. Earl Scruggs was influenced by a man named Snuffy Jenkins who was popular on the radio in the Carolinas in the 1930's. The earliest known syncopation recorded is found in New Orleans jazz from the 1920's. The banjo is an instrument of West African origin, with the resonator being an American adaptation from the 1860's or 1870's. Bluegrass is a mix of Scots-Irish folk (which had syncopation) with African music (which had A LOT of syncopation).
