Why Christians Can't Trust Psychology
Author is Ed Bulkley. Did anyone read this book, or was required to read it at a Fundy U? I had to read it for an educational psychology class and really had a hard time with it probably because I've been greatly helped by Christian Psychiatrics (sp?) before. And the reviews on Amazon are so depressing: http://www.amazon.com/Why-Christians-Can...escending.
What are your thoughts on the book? "I falter where I firmly trod, And falling with my weight of cares Upon the great world's altar-stairs That slope thro' darkness up to God, I stretch lame hands of faith, and grope, And gather dust and chaff, and call To what I feel is Lord of all, And faintly trust the larger hope." RE: Why Christians Can't Trust Psychology
I went to a psychologist once. It was in the deepest moments of my anxiety in fundamentalism. I told him I had a constant fear of going to hell. I had also developed other nervous ticks, such as constantly wanting to make the sound "shhh" and "ffff" (yeah, I know... I probably just wanted to swear lol). He wasn't a Christian, and it was a bit of an awkward conversation. So, I can't really recommend secular counselors with help on Christian matters. But I've never been to a Christian counselor and probably would have welcomed the opportunity at the time.
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; - Titus 2:11-12 |

RE: Why Christians Can't Trust Psychology
A man said the following-
The Scriptures do not support the popular assumption that Rachael espouses above--that people must go through some grieving process because of past hurts to find "a place of true forgiveness." The apostle Paul suffered more than most people can even imagine and yet he never moaned and groaned about it. In fact, in a letter that he wrote from prison, where he expresses joy in the midst of suffering (because of the hope he has in Christ and His kingdom), he admonishes the church to do something antithetical to the modern philosophy of psychology: "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead" (Philippians 3:13b NIV). The apostle Paul, who was soon to have his chopped off, actually describes the trials and sufferings we face in this life as nothing compared to the excellencies of Christ, stating "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory" (2 Corinthians 4:17 NKJV). Unfortunately, we live in a psychological society with the pretense that psychology is scientific and therefore more insightful about human nature or the ontology of the mind than the Bible. This reasoning is specious and leads to every sort of confusion. The faithlessness in modern Christendom is astounding today and its reliance on modern psychology shows how emasculated and effeminate the church has become through its reliance on empty philosophy and vain deceit. This Fundy man just said that mourning over past hurts is for "sissies," and what we must do is ignore those, put on a tough face and move on. I wonder 1) if he's married and, 2) if he's older than 16. He does not sound like someone acquainted with people and life. The Fellowship of Post-Fundamentalists |

Books like this make a lot of sense to those who were taught to "suck it up" and take whatever was dished out to us. Then some day we realize we're messed in the head and need to face our problems rather than push them further down inside.

This book and philosophy teaches you how to be a good follower of men and remain like that. Fundyism does not teach you how to stand for yourself and claim your rights. Asceticism does the same.
