RE: New Calvinism
I'm New Covenant but not Calvinist in any sense, new or old. A lot of New Calvinist today is really just Covenant theology (not New Covenant.. different, even though they use the same word). I believe in gospel sanctification - that sanctification is part and parcel of the good news, and is freely given to us, and not our own responsibility to do.
Grace means that God does something for me; law means that I do something for God. God has certain holy demands which he places upon me: that is law. Now if law means that God requires something of me for their fulfillment, then deliverance means he no longer requires that from me, but himself provides it. |

Both progressional dispensationalism and covenant theology are very common in New Calvinism, and they sort of blend together. But I definitely wouldn't idenitfy New Calvinism with covenant theology-- otherwise it wouldn't be "New" Calvinism, but just plain ole Calvinism. I am so far removed from any circle that even debates something like that I had no idea there was a term for it. It's definitely not a "mainstream" term. Try looking it up in an IVP dictionary and see what you find. Then again, any time I see the words "Gospel" or "Biblical" in the title of some belief system, I automatically ignore it. |

RE: New Calvinism
After a small amount of research, "Gospel Sanctification" was coined fairly recently, like 2004ish.

RE: New Calvinism
It is just plain old calvinism. With fashion and cool music. The new calvinism is more like the Old calvinism than calvinism has been for 30-40 years.

RE: New Calvinism
I'm not sure what "New Covenant theology" John Piper and Tim Keller hold to. It certainly isn't that same as what I believe. It seems there must be two strands of theology referred to as NCT, because Joseph Prince, Andrew Farley, Malcolm Smith and a few others are miles away from what men like John Piper and Tim Keller believe, and their approach is very different as well.

I was mocking the term...but I don't believe that Sanctification is as Synergistic as many would lead one to believe. I like the Jerry Bridges approach better than say a Jay Adams, Jim Berg or someone else who separates justification and sanctification far too much IMO. In that sense, I tie the gospel to sanctification much more strongly than many I encountered in fundamentalism. And of course, the guys most aggressively promoting a highly synergistic sanctification are usually sustained by some form of counseling ministry, so anything they say must be filtered through the fiscal benefits they derive from it.
