I gather you have not had to deal with the death of a teenager from a botched home-made abortion. Or dealing with one of your or your kid's classmate's abortion.

The question one asks over and over is: if this child could have had access to condoms, could this murder/suicide have been prevented?

One thing is for teenagers to think and act like adults, premeditatedly go, buy condoms and be prepared. What we know, as soon as we remember what being a teenager was like, is that teenagers gravitate wildly between acting like kids and acting like adults. We know many of these cases of teenage sex are a matter of accident, or lack of impulse control. If you barely have money to pay the entrance to the movie theater and a coke, clearly budgeting for condoms is not going to work.

I assume you have educated your kids well, that you trust your kids NOT to have sex before marriage. So the question to ask your kids is: do you know of other kids who are sexually active? Are they using protection? Most of the answers we got was: "Are you crazy?" Susy's mom would kill her if she knew she was having sex, or if she found a condom in her pockets."

How is this situation any different if you asked your kid: "Do you know other kids playing with a loaded gun?"

Of course, it is NOT our responsibility. Or is it?

For every difficult and complicated question there is an answer that is simple, easily understood and wrong." H.L. Mencken

Ricardo,

I am genuinely sorry for your heartache. May I gently say that if someone is attempting a home-made abortion that there may be several other large issues In play besides having free access to contraception.

Have a good evening.
