RE: GOD HATES FADS
I remember getting demerits in school for talking about Lion King when it first came out which eventually led into them discovering that I actually went to a theater with my parents and saw it.

Silly bandz and those neon bracelets with the sayings on them were not permitted. I think it was because all the guys wore them and the administration considered it jewelery, and it's a sin for men to wear jewelery (unless they are married).

Oh, yeah. Lion King was off-limits for me too, growing up. I've still never actually seen it. All shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well. |

I did not ban my children from reading anything but I had faith that my daughter would recognize the Twilight books for the tripe that they were. She did.

RE: GOD HATES FADS
You know, we all want to protect our children from all sicknesses.
It turns out, it is counterproductive. All those colds and ear infections are what give children the antibodies they need to fight of infections. I have read studies that researched what soldiers had better chance of survival. Turns out soldiers who come from perfect homes, perfect families, who have never been exposed to anything are the first to die. The best survivors in the battlefields are, -lo and behold- survivors of broken marriages, survivors of dangerous neighborhoods, survivors of abusive childhoods. It is absolutely criminal when a 20 year-old girl doesn't even know what a condom is. How is she going to survive if daddy is no longer with her every minute of the day? When is it too early to start teaching about sex? Have you seen the statistics about underage sex? How many children started being sexually active at 15, 14, 13 and 12? PLEASE! start the conversations immediately. Not when they reach a "certain age." Keep a bowl of condoms out in the open. (Not for your daughter, of course, but so she can share them with her friends she knows are sexually active. No girl is going to come to their parents and say: "Mom, Dad, I'm going to so and so's house, but some boys may come over, and we may play spin the bottle, and some of the dares may be affected by all the hormones raging and ADD, so it may be a good idea to take some protection, just in case..." For every difficult and complicated question there is an answer that is simple, easily understood and wrong." H.L. Mencken |

How about I keep a bowl of candy out and say "eat it, as much as you want, whenever you want" and then tell my child that I've already bought them the next 5 sizes up in clothing for when he or she needs it. Then we'll have a bowl of money out too....and give her some tips on how to rob a bank so that when our money runs out so she can make her own plans or maybe teach her to embezzle. There are far better ways, albeit not foolproof, because nothing is, to parent than this outrageous suggestion. |

It allowed a group of kids to serve themselves from a buffet only the food they wanted to eat. The first two meals they stuffed themselves with deserts, ice cream cake and pies. Then they went back to Mac and cheese for a while. Over time (a month) they found that kids will NATURALLY eat a balanced diet, over time, if left to their own devices. (If you try this only once per week, they will always go for the forbidden food.) Many of us have seen what happens during Halloween with kids who are not allowed to eat candy the rest of the year. Many of us learned what getting sick by eating too much chocolate is all about. Many of us who left the church in our early twenties learned the hard way what happens when we drink too much alcohol. At some point, hopefully sooner than later, we learn moderation. Oh, by the way, those studies I mentioned were from the late fifties. Please rent "The Lion King." What possible bad thing could any kid pick up by watching that movie? If your son continues to "play doctor" with the neighbor's girl at some point they need to have some age-appropriate understanding of why that is not a good idea. Simple control and avoidance are good in the short run, but disastrous in the long run. For every difficult and complicated question there is an answer that is simple, easily understood and wrong." RE: GOD HATES FADS
I am not into simple control and avoidance either. I think there is a balance. To me, the message of "here's a bowl of condoms kids" says, we know you are gonna do it, so we may as well supply free contraception.
Two issues: 1. This assumes that all teenagers have no self control and are interested in sexual experimentation. 2. It sends the message that even though this is an adult activity we are suggesting you give it a try and see if you can handle it. And then to boot, we'll make it easy for you to do so. That's inapproriate. My message to my children will be, sex is intended for marriage. If you choose to play beforehand, please use contraception and BUY it yourselves because thats what adults do! Kids use their parents bowl of condoms. Adults buy them themselves. And then they live with the consequences of their choices too. Whatever they may be. And I'll love you no matter what. **I've seen the Lion King.*** Did I miss something? Was that comment for me? |
