RE: Fundy U: BJU edition
The pink and blue sidewalks work as a metaphor - at least when I was there, there absolutely were sidewalks where I as a woman was not allowed to walk. But they certainly weren't actually color coded!
Maybe they should have been painted! Instead you just have to remember, especially when rules changed after 7:00 p.m. Especially as a new student, it was confusing to remember! I especially hated the rule that said I couldn't walk to the practice shacks by myself but not being a music major, I wasn't allowed to practice in the nice rooms under Mary Gaston (I think it was Gaston). How in the world was I supposed to get my five hours of practice in a week? I eventually gave up piano lessons, because I was too shy to try to find someone to walk me over to the shacks (and a friend with HER to walk her BACK to the dorms!) And then how would I get back without breaking the rules? Just humiliating, to be 18 and not allowed to walk for five minutes alone across campus. So yeah, painted sidewalks would have been humiliating and babyish, but no more humiliating than the rules themselves. It would have only SHOWN the reality of how we actually had to behave. (And BTW, I just dated myself by mentioning the practice shacks! I think they were torn down when I was in grad school.) "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |
