I guess I appreciate it more as folk music than the hillbilly music that a lot of people gather their perceptions from. And movies like, "Deliverance" didn't help. Tongue

I'll give alittle Shenandoah Baptist Boys update. You know all we play is gospel, for the most part, but we have a few hot numbers that we play that are instrumentals, only one comes to mind right now is Dixie Breakdown, but I saw you ref Deliverance, me and my banjo guy are gonna work up dueling banjos this week, we'll have to be real selective about where we play it, some of the churches we play at aren't even too sure about the regular gospel bluegrass, much less playing that worldly famous Hellywood movie song!Big Grin

The movie that really gave bluegrass a shot in the arm was "O Brother Where Art thou" What a sound track! That movie is in my top 10 favorites ....."My Hair" Tongue

RE: Hey Greg
I actually like bluegrass. It's somewhat of a guilty pleasure of mine. Don't like The Rochesters though. They were waaay overplayed at my church.

Now, country music... I hate country. Well, 98% of country music, anyway. Based on what I've read on a few sites, a lot of people apparantly don't know the difference between bluegrass and country, and that bugs me some.

That soundtrack is one of my all-time favorites. I thought the movie was a little goofy, but I appreciated George Clooney playing something other than a smolderingly handsome dou***.

RE: Hey Greg
The Infamous Stringduster .... wow can those boys play. i grew up listening to Bluegrass [Doyle and the boys]. never really got into Blue grass as my music of choice. Last year a friend introduced me to the Stringdusters and i was hooked.

'In God's Country'
'You Can't Stop The Changes'
'Magic Hat #9'

Magic Hat #9 was nominated for a Grammy last year (not this past Sunday)

I'm going to have to admit it, I dont keep up with the bluegrass scene, not even the gospel guys much. I have my favorites like Doyle, Thyrd Time Out and the old timers. I had never even heard of the Stringdusters, looked em up and heard Silver Sky.....excellent! Try looking up Sarah Jarosz, she is a young kid doing some really good stuff. (wouldn't have known about her except she was on Austin City Limits one night) What attracts me, I guess, to this style of music are those acoustic instruments!! I love it! My dad is 83 yrs old and seriously (still) a guitar monster. He really didn't play alot of bluegrass, mostly country, and Chet Atkins style stuff, but he taught all of kids to play. Some of my buddies thought I was nuts when I would break out my Flatt and Scruggs "8 tracks" just after listening to Deep Purple or AC/DC, btw played in some fairly hard rock & roll bands in the day, probably why my son likes it, btw, he's alot like me, loves and can play several instruments and enjoys alot of different styles. You can see us playing a little bit of blues on youtube at tsettleguitar (we're sitting on a couch, he's fooling with a slide in the beginning, I think he had all of ten minutes practice with the thing) I see he's even put up a couple of my bluegrass bands vids on there, if you don't have any good speakers my band sounds like, well you can guess, btw I'm 100 pounds lighter than the videos.

Somebody make me shut up, but aren't we always delighted to talk about ourselves? Big Grin Taylor left you a message on the "In Search Of Reason" thread.

Headed to the park to do some running!

RE: Hey Greg
Shoes introduction to [current] Bluegrass [specifically the Infamous Stringdusters]

My wife is friends with a girl that is trying to ‘make it’ in Nashville. The girl is friends with some big names in the industry, and she knows the guitar player in the Stringdusters. The ISD were playing a show in the Northeast last year, and I went to the show. I was BLOWN away by these guys talent. Each one of them [stand-up bass, guitar, dobro, banjo and fiddle] could carry a band on their own. It was one of the best live shows I have ever seen. While I enjoy their CD’s [or mp3’s, hahaha] the CD’s don’t capture their truly amazing live show, which, in my opinion, makes them even awesome-er!

I'm not really a Clooney fan, but I thought he was fantastic in this movie.

RE: Hey Greg
My favorite blueglass album "Pickin' on Zepplin". Yes Blueglass covers of Led Zepplin. There's also Hayseed Dixie and The Boss Hoss.
