Protect the brand.

Fundamentalist Baptists™ are as apt to bash Methodists and Lutherans. If the particular Baptist Church is not of the reformed variety, they will go at great lengths to demonize Calvinism as well. Catholicism is just a big, bad boogie-man, really an easy target.

In my conversion, I had to struggle greatly with every bad thing ever taught to me about the Catholic Church, my past morbid interest in Foxe's Book of Martyrs, my mom's explanations of why my rich uncle had so many heartbreaking struggles (because he was once called to the ministry, but became Catholic instead).

It would be a good thing for many Fundamentalists to attend a mass or two, to realize that Catholics both "preach Christ crucified", and worship the risen Savior.

I had planned on attending a Catholic service while I was on vacation last year. Didn't work out as I ended up hunkered down inside a house during a hurricane which flooded the mountain we were on. We had to wait 2 days for the flooding to go down enough to get home.
