Don has good brand suggestions. Bourbon might be a little easier than plain whiskey, because it's a little sweeter.

I don't remember seeing "whiskey" written on most of the bottles. They all look very similar to me as an ex Fundy...all very "forbidden evil fruits".

I've had some brandy in my Gluhwein at a restaurant. That wasn't bad at all and sweet sounds really good rather than bitter.

For starting out, mix some whiskey or bourbon with either Coke or Mountain Dew- preferably Dew actually, and there ya go. Straight is a bit "advanced".

Anything by W.L. Wellers. Google it. It receives consistently high ratings and is very inexpensive. It's way better than Beam, Jack, etc., and cheaper.

Maker's Mark and Knob Creek are both pretty tasty bourbons, and bourbon is generally a little sweeter. Not sweet, like a wine cooler, but sweeter than scotch or plain whiskey.

Now that I think about it, I definitely started out mixing it with Coke... then the amount of Coke gradually started decreasing. Now I'm not sure why I would waste bourbon that way.

These guys are right, a simple mixer is the probably the best introduction.

Heh. Surely they have a whiskey section. Bourbon, Scotch*, Rye*, Irish Whiskey like Jameson's, Canadian whiskey**... all variations on the same thing.

A blended Irish whiskey has a little milder taste than most of the others. Think Jameson or Bushmill's.

For bourbon, Maker's Mark has a very light taste and it is higher mid-range in price.

*I would not start out with this.
**I have not tried any of the Canadians cause... well... they're from Canada.

Will whiskey settle an upset stomach or make you go to sleep quickly? These are the things I like about sweet wines plus they are healthy.
I'm looking for a good reason to convince myself that I need to try some.

I bought a nasty "on sale" brand of wine last week and the only way I could finish it was with some apple juice. My folks actually have a drink mix machine that they use for theirs, but they aren't living anywhere close to us for us to learn from.

I took a bartending class and I'm actually looking for a bartening job.

I really can't recommend a brand because I don't really like whiskey, so I haven't had enough types to pick a favorite. You are going to have to spend money if you want good-tastin stuff though. Jack may be popular, but in my opinon, it's not all that great.
