And this is the problem with the entire attempt at civil discourse online.

We all see ourselves as reasonable people. Nobody claims the title "fringe lunatic" gladly.

But "I was just giving my opinion" isn't grounds for being unkind. And not every thread everywhere is the appropriate time to give every single opinion you might have.

Just because the thread contains the word "creationism" or "gay" or "Republican" or "taxes" or "liquor" doesn't mean that person or people involved are inviting you to share everything you've ever thought on the given topic. Consider what the actual conversation is about before you post and then try to consider how what you write will sound to other people who don't agree with you. Let your words be always with...grace.

Here's a simple test: if heard a group of people that you only barely knew discussing the given topic in real life, would you burst into their midst and say what you just wrote? If not, then don't do it here either. That's just common courtesy.

I think it also gets hard because we come here in varying stages of hurt and maturity. We've come through different trials. For some of us SFL is the only place we can be honest about where we've come. When someone comes along who just disagrees with you but then proceeds to slam you personally for that, it's hard.

We're actually allowed to disagree with each other. We're allowed to have different views. We're allowed to have different beliefs and still identify as being christian.

When someone is really hurting and tries to share something they're honestly struggling with, and someone else doesn't get the tone and just decides to establish themselves as the morality police, it's hard.
