RE: Mitt Romney Skips Traditional Visit to Bob Jones University
That is the problem with people politics.

I worked hard one electoral season preparing the party's state platform. It was hours and hours, over a whole year, hammering out compromises on hot issues, coming out with what I thought was a pretty good document. The final candidate took the document, thanked us profusely, then proceded to put said document as far away from anything as possible. The campaign came down to a popularity contest, to sound bites, to who could repeat back to the voters what they wanted to hear.

It gets worse: 40% of the electorate is Republican and will not be moved by any argument. 40% is Democrat and will also will not be swayed by nothing. The remaining 20% of the electorate don't give a damn about anything, will vote impulsively based on momentum, sound bites or the candidate's smile.

In every campaign there are ideas that capture the imagination of the voters, that have nothing to do with what government is about. Example: in the last electoral campaign just about every candidate spoke about closing Guantanamo. Great words, great sentiments, nothing to do with reality. In this campaign Immigration Reform seems to be one of the issues discussed heavily. When push comes to shove nothing really will change that much. There are too many interest$ on both sides of this issue.

Once in office, it is really the party machine the ones that governs, the president being merely a figurehead. Hence the monikers: the party of Big Government versus the party of Big Business.

For every difficult and complicated question there is an answer that is simple, easily understood and wrong." H.L. Mencken
