Smartphones?!?!?

RE: Smartphones?!?!?
I still have an LG ENV3. It's a texting phone that lets me on the internet if i really need it. I have an old data plan: 150 mb for 15.00.

I could get a droid, even for FREE on verizon (Certified pre owned)...but then I have to move up to a new data plan. Cheapest one is 30 a month. So my "free phone" still is gonna cost me an extra 330 bucks over the next two years...

On the other hand, 15 more bucks a month won't kill me. I could cancel my newspaper which never gets read...

I'm with you Jordan. My ENV3 was replaced one time because of random shut downs. It's been with me for two years and not failed me since. It texts, calls (although calls SUCK in our area because we are so remote), and even gets on the internet.

I'm the same way with cars. I drive as my vehicle a 96 dodge caravan. I paid 2 grand for it probably 5 years ago...cash. She has served me so well. I've been on trips 400 miles from home with her and back. She is my car of preference, even over my wife's nicer 4 wheel drive..(unless we have snow LOL) Rusting out but still works. I won't replace her until she absolutely can't be fixed....I must get attached to those things that serve me well!

RE: Smartphones?!?!?
I'm in the process of tweaking my Samsung Galaxy 5.0 media player into a VoiP phone. Loving what it can do so far. Runs android apps and with a combination of google voice and skype I can use it as a phone anywhere I have wifi access (pretty much everywhere I spend a significant amount of time). So its essentially a smartphone but I don't have to pay 30/mo for a data plan. In fact, when I finish setting everything up it will only cost me eight - yes $8 - a month to use it to make unlimited calls and texting. I'm going to get a t-mobile prepaid phone as a backup for any rare occasions that I need phone access and I'm not in a wifi area. I can get 1000 minutes that are good for a year for $100 so basically my monthly phone costs will be <$20 instead of $80.

I'm also loving how friggin huge the screen is on it. I was looking at the display model at Best buy and then walked around the corner and saw the iTouch and it looked so pathetically small there was no way I could compare it. I originally got the galaxy as a smartphone alternative to avoid the extra 30/mo for the data plan and was pleased that a side bonus was that I can turn it into a phone.

To quote Apple: "There's an app for that..." AOL has an iPhone AIM app.

RE: Smartphones?!?!?
There's someone that still uses AIM? There are apps for other IM clients as well. I prefer to have the IM service setup to just switch to texting me when I sign out, rather than having to make sure an app is running & signed in.

I've heard this as well, but we all know what happened the last time they said iPhone 5 was coming out. We might wind up with the iPhone 4Sx or something.

But is it really a good idea to buy a new product just when it comes out. One of my misgivings about iPhones is that they come out with a new one every 2-3 years and before I know it, mine will be obsolete.
