Preachers signing Bibles
At my fundy church, it was popular practice to have visiting preachers sign your Bible. After every service, all the teens would crowd around the MOG with their KJVs in the air waiting to get the preacher's signature written in the front cover. One of my friends had his Bible signed by Jack Hyles and Jack Patterson... I remember I used to be so jealous of him!
Nowadays, the whole concept looks strange to me. Its like having your school teachers sign your textbooks. Asking a MOG to sign your Bible seems kinda like man worship to me. Did you ever participate in this practice? Did you ever get any well known preacher's John Hancock scribbled tn the front of your AV 1611? I only had a few signatures, none of them very famous. What is your opinion on this fundy hobby? |

RE: Preachers signing Bibles
Yeah, I did that when I was a kid. The biggest names I had in mine were Hugh Pyle and Bob Gray from Texas. I'm sure that Bible is gone now in the many moves I made. Not that I really care. It's the text inside that counts, not somebody's name.
I walk with bare, hushed feet the ground Ye tread with boldness shod;
I dare not fix with mete and bound The love and power of God. - J.G. Whittier |

RE: Preachers signing Bibles
Oh yes, I got a good fundy lineup: Hyles, Hutson, Sightler, Voegtlin, Mrs. John R. Rice, Patterson, Ouellette, Lee, some HAC tour guys (the cute ones, of course) and more. Ron Williams might even have signed it; I do know he came to our church and we supported his "ministry".
I am against this practice now and view it as man worship. |

RE: Preachers signing Bibles
I never had my Bible signed, but I saw Ron Hamilton in the grocery store when I was visiting BJU (back in my high school days) and had him sign a napkin. It hung on our fridge for the longest time.

RE: Preachers signing Bibles
If anybody has a Bible signed by the authors I'll be impressed.
Otherwise, not so much. "It doesn't help to wear a hat on your head if your posterior is exposed." ~ PW "Don't make crazy your normal and then wonder why nobody agrees with you." ~ EC |

RE: Preachers signing Bibles
Sam Gipp and Greg Locke signed my Bible.
Sam Gipp told me "don't do anything to disqualify yourself from the ministry". I am pretty sure I am "disqualified" by now. For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; - Titus 2:11-12 |

RE: Preachers signing Bibles
I always thought it was weird that people would have preachers sign their Bibles. Like it was reducing God's word to a trophy.
"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff." ~Doctor Who |

RE: Preachers signing Bibles
Been there, done that. It is kinda like having teachers sign your textbook... for me, I've always been curious to see which verse the preacher would put next to his signature. That's always a very telling thing about the preacher.

RE: Preachers signing Bibles
exIFB, you knew Greg Locke, too? I heard him preach at camp.
Didn't ask him or anyone else to sign my Bible. I always thought that was a little bit weird ... "The phoenix hope, can wing her way through desert skies, and still defying fortune's spite; revive from ashes and rise." Cervantes |

RE: Preachers signing Bibles
When I was a kid I used to get preachers to sign my Bible. When I reached my early teens I quit. After I graduated from FU of Powell, TN I hit the road as a missionary. I would occasionally have kids come up and ask for my signature in their Bibles. I would do it but I never liked it. I don't recall anyone who wasn't a teenager asking me to sign it.
It is a weird practice. If only those people knew! They would white my name out of their Bibles in a hurry! Ability without honor is useless. Cicero |
